Integrity Toys 2018 reveal pt.2: Nu Face - The Counter - Culture Collection

Next up in the webinar was the eagerly anticipated Nu Face line. Jessy Ayala designed this again and was invited by Carol Roth to present the concept. It seems that the Nu Face agency ladies take part in an edgy video clip, designed to cause controversy. The appearance of Lukas Maverick, along with a line up of characters not used for quite a while, plus an old sculpt as a new character is one part of the equation. The other is edgy, outré fashions and styling, neon colour details and S&M details that made lots of collectors happy but also left many in the cold. Let’s check what all the fuss is about. Have in mind that the price of each doll in this line is now $150.00 and they are all available from Integrity Toys dealers except one, that you will see at the end of the post.

Lukas makes a surprise appearance here, as most people were expecting him to be included in the new Hommes line to be presented this fall in Convention. He still has the old Homme body, just like the Industry guys. His styling is quite daring for IT standards, reminding many a Tom Of Finland guy (Jessy admitted it was one of the influences). I wonder what exactly makes an otherwise very interesting doll cost $150.00 wearing a pretty basic outfit without any accessories to make it so expensive. Is it the tattoo? I seriously doubt it. Is it the painted hairstyle and facial hair? Is it the septum ring? IT knows Lukas will sell out no matter what (as he did, soon after the presentation). I did preorder him, he’s gorgeous, even though the outfit looks half done. And I mean the bottom half. Yes, those shorts are an eyesore (pun intended). Pet peeve: sandals with socks and garters. German tourists rejoice. A Perfecto style boot with metallic tip would have been so much better.

Yes, Integrity Toys heard people calling for the Vanessa 2.0 sculpt comeback as a different character and here she is. Violaine is the younger Perrin sister and she rocks! Great styling and make up, with lots of piercings, even a nose ring that is removable. I love the stacked bangles, they remind me of someone completely different: Millicent Rogers, the early 20th century socialite, wore lots of stacked bangles, just as Loulou De La Falaise did much later. Violaine is a variant of Violette (remember that the Perrins are French and all daughters have names that begin with a V) and also a 1996 single by Cocteau Twins, whom I adore. Some people did not like the dark blue lipstick but I think it fits her perfectly. That and her eyeliner are reminiscent of Aerodynamic Vanessa Perrin from 2009. The jeans are definitely like the ones by Balenciaga in their Spring 2018 collection. They are convertible, meaning that each piece is detachable - they have hooks to attach to each other. I am thinking that maybe I can recreate the Versace denim JLo boots that looked like drooping pants. I love the asymmetrical top and the paillete parka. The bag is a miniature wonder and yellow, just perfect. So,is the chocker. And the peacock ring is amazing. Her boots look plain by comparison. Glad to say that she’s coming home.

Important Note: The jewel on Annik's face is not-removable. Removing the jewel will damage the doll permanently and void the warranty.

IMG_6456.JPG
IMG_6458.JPG

After a prolonged absence, Annik returns again, with a last name (Vandale), wild styling and a prominent place in the Nu Face collection. She has the same police/bondage hat as Lukas, a beautiful small bag with lots of details, a face ring that cannot be removed (it will leave a dent and void the warranty) and a pair of semi transparent boots made of organza that, according to what Jessy said, has a holographic effect.

  • Long over-sized puffy coat (dark berry color);
  • Satin top with neon colored -digital print art;
  • Dark jean pants with attached neon green leather corset, sileeve wrap detail and pierced sleeve detail;
  • Short "patent leather" boots with glitter detail;
  • Star/moon/third eye jewelry (asymmetric earrings, layered bracelets with stars/moons);
  • Bright pink slim sunglasses;
  • Pale violet purse with spike stud detail;
  • Doll stand;
  • Certificate of authenticity.
IMG_6476.JPG
IMG_6477.JPG

Dominique is back but in Nu Face instead of her usual Fashion Royalty position. She gives off a JLo vibe and her multimix fashion is quite interesting. The violet lipstick looks quite good on her but could be problematic for redressing. Her eyeglasses look a bit weird on her. I think a pair styled like those worn by the band Devo would have looked much better.

This is the lottery doll, so do not ask dealers for this one. Colette 1.0 returns - last we saw her she was part of the W Club wedding trio. She’s dark again, which is cool, and her fashion is the most Indian inspired from the whole collection. Her fashion is Gucci styled again, with lots of colours and textures mixing, much in the style Alessandro Michele has being using in the Gucci collections these past few years. Her boots remind me of the ones worn by this year’s upgrade Eugenia. Love the bag.

Integrity Toys 2018 reveal pt.1: THE INDUSTRY™ - The Lovesick Collection

Almost a month ago, W Club members had finally received information about the eagerly anticipated webinar presentation of Integrity Toys dolls. Four line were to be presented in the event, which was held on August 25th, with Carol Roth presiding and all designers present so that they could talk about their respective lines and also answer questions in the Q&A session at the end of the event. I am doing a separate post for each line and one for the event doll. I will give you all available information on the dolls plus my opinion on them, and welcome yours in the comments. Let’s kick off the posts then with the first line presented, THE INDUSTRY™: The Lovesick Collection, designed by David Buttry! The line also sets the overall tone for the Style Lab coming up in the convention. All these dolls are available to preorder through Integrity Toys dealers, which you can find here.

IMG_6393.JPG

My first overall impression: more daring and improved from the previous, debut collection. I’m taking a wild guess here, that the line debut did not go quite as expected and, along with the complaints about the demise of Dynamite Girls, it led to a mix of the two, hence the refreshment of the line up with familiar old sculpts, both DG and legacy ones like Janay. It also helps with the economic aspect. Price is up, all across the lines, which is an issue with many collectors. That, combined with the fact that the dolls will arrive shortly and the convention looming, surely affects spending this year. Oh, did I mention Tulabelle is getting a new sculpt? It will be unveiled at the convention. Weird to change a sculpt only a year after it premiered, I mean there was not a backlash against it like, say, Vanessa 2.0.

f Rufus’ return at the 2018 convention this Fall!

Janay® Doll

THE INDUSTRY ™: The Lovesick Collection

Approx. Ship Date: November

Suggested Retail: $130.00 US

Available Via Dealers

Edition Size: 725

Head Sculpt: Janay 2.5

Body Type: THE INDUSTRY™

Foot Sculpt: High-heeled

Skin Tone: FR Black

Hair Color: Raven

IMG_6390.JPG

Included:

  • 12-inch fully articulated fashion doll with rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes;
  • Brocade coat;
  • Satin jumpsuit;
  • Thigh-high stockings;
  • Tall lace-up boots;
  • "Pearl" choker necklace, ring, earrings and bracelet;
  • Doll stand;
  • Certificate of authenticity.
IMG_6391.JPG

Janay is the doll that started Integrity Toys, hence she has a special place in its history. I am happy that they found a place for her into regular collections and hope to see more of her in future releases. I love this one and preordered her. Both as an ensemble and separately the clothes and accessories (that pearl chocker!) have lots of potential and the doll is gorgeous. David said during the presentation that the top bun can come down and brushed back so I’ll probably do that at some point (says the guy who still has Style Renaissance Adéle untouched). Oh and Lovesick is the name of the new single that she releases with her new group. Janay 3.0 sculpt was used in JEM and ITBE releases, so it’s a bit weird that this is the 2.5 version. Or it’s probably a typo in the release email and the version is 3.5 just like the following doll, meaning the same face as 3.0 but a smaller head.

  • 12-inch fully articulated fashion doll with rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes;
  • Metallic lamé dress;

  • Orange tights;
  • Metallic blue loafers;
  • Handbag;
  • Barrette, earrings and ring;
  • Doll stand;
  • Certificate of authenticity.
IMG_6396.JPG

Alysa is another legacy sculpt from the early Integrity Toys lines. She is now a part f The Industry line like Janay and looks beautiful here. The whole collection is inspired by the work of Alessandro Michele at Gucci, with this outfit being the most emphatic example. 3.5 for the sculpt means she is the same as her previous appearance in ITBE 2015, but with a smaller head.

  • Head band;
  • Earrings, ring and choker collar;

IMG_6401.JPG

Jade is another legacy sculpt of Integrity Toys, the third in this lineup. All these old faces have been redone to make the heads smaller, in order to match the rest of the heads in The Industry. Jade used to be the Asian sculpt but she looks more Latino here. The outfit looks very Gucci again, with the tee logo and the head band the most obvious references.

IMG_6406.JPG

At the beginning of the presentation, David and Carol mentioned that one of the DG sculpts coming over to The Industry is Rufus Blue, which is a collector’s favourite. Imagine the surprise when the doll that opened the show was a new male doll, Bellamy Blue, who is Rufus’ brother. Everyone drooled over this gorgeous doll (referred to in the stats as Fashion figure), and with good reason. He is handsome, gorgeously dressed (amazing parka, fantastically embroidered shirt, printed t-shirt) and has great accessories (the bag, the glasses, the frat ring, the boots). What’s not to like? With the new Hommes collection just around the corner, it’s good to see that more great male dolls are part of the other collections as well. I preordered him and will be happy to add him to my collection. The Gucci bag is the icing of this very tasty cake.

So what do you think of the new Industry dolls? Are you getting any and if yes, which ones?

The traditional Net-A-Porter debacle goes live once again with a new Jason Wu doll and his perfume

A few days ago, W Club members received information about a new Jason Wu exclusive in collaboration with Net-A-Porter: an offer of the Jason Wu Perfume with a limited edition Elyse Jolie doll, dressed in the designer’s gown that Lily Aldridge, the face of the fragrance campaign, was wearing in last year’s CFDA Awards. I’m not crazy about either doll or dress (she’s like a pale version of Séduisante Elyse) and with the price it comes with, it was the easiest pass ever. More below.

IMG_6258.JPG

The doll went live today in most Net-A-Porter websites in Europe but not Asia (apart from Nepal it seems) and certainly not in the USA, causing much grief and causing lots of conversations in forums online from disgruntled doll collectors not being able to get a doll. The doll/perfume combo means no air shipping, causing problems with ordering if you live in a country that cannot receive packages with ground shipping from the respective Net-A-Porter warehouse. Price of the combo? $380 US, or £292 UK still available at time of writing this post. There was an email from the W Club informing members that the US Net-A-Porter website has not put up the doll yet and is unclear when that will be, maybe later tonight or tomorrow.

FullSizeRender.jpg

The W Club secured a second version of the doll, with blonde hair, for a members only lottery this September. The catch: overseas members have to pay the full set price but never receive their bottle of perfume due to the airmail restrictions. The club gives options for members to ship to a US address so that the full package can be sent but no way to sent it directly overseas. The easy way would have been, since this is a special version of the set for W Club members only, to make the set available with or without the perfume, or with a special coupon to get the fragrance from a shop in the members country.

FullSizeRender.jpg

This is a description of the offer: “To celebrate the exclusive launch of the Jason Wu Fragrance on NET-A-PORTER, designer Jason Wu created a limited-edition scented doll wearing a replica of the point d'esprit tulle gown embroidered with Swarovski crystals and worn by Lily Aldridge, the face of the Jason Wu Fragrance campaign, to the 2017 CFDA Awards.  Only available through NET-A-PORTER, the NET-A-PORTER x Jason Wu doll will be sold with a 3oz Jason Wu fragrance starting on Wednesday, August 15th, 2018”.

FullSizeRender.jpg

And Jason Wu said: “I love the idea of immersing my worlds: doll design, fashion, and beauty. All three worlds are authentic to me and I’m excited to integrate all of my loves into one project with one of my greatest partners, NET-A-PORTER.” Exclusively created just for this special offer, the packaging perfectly matches with the fragrance and is even scented with the delicate scent of the Jason Wu fragrance. Which could be cause for worry to those suffer from allergies.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Doll specs:

12-inch/1:6 scale, fully articulated, scented vinyl collectible doll with velvet touch finish, rooted hair, delicately hand-applied eyelashes. Includes gown, shoes, jewelry and a doll scaled miniature replica of the Jason Wu fragrance bottle prop (this is a doll accessory only and the miniature does not contain fragrance). The doll cannot stand alone and certain poses may require hand support. A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up. Sold in tandem with a full-sized, 3oz bottle of the Jason Wu Fragrance.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Edition Size -300 dolls (Brunette version, exclusive to NAP starting on August 15th, 2018)

and 225 (Blond version, exclusive to the W Club via right-to-buy lottery in September 2018)

For Jason Wu 3oz Fragrance specs, please see the NET-A-PORTER website.

As always, the doll pictured is a prototype. Final colors and textures may vary slightly in final production.

ALLERGY ALERT
This doll's package is scented with JASON WU Fragrance oil (contained in a hidden scent pad inside a compartment of the packaging). Please take careful note of this if you have allergies or are sensitivitie to fragrance.

FullSizeRender.jpg

NET-A-PORTER EXCLUSIVE VERSION(applies to the brunette version only):

  • Price is $380 for doll & 3oz fragrance (fragrance and doll not sold separately);
  • The plan was that the offer was expected to go live on NET-A-PORTER.com on Wednesday, August 15th, 2018, 7:00 am ET as a target, however we now know this never happened (the original date of release was supposed to be the 13th and it changed, often retailers don’t follow their release plans exactly). Please check their site at your discretion, since previous offers have gone up early as well.
  • There will be severe shipping limitations due to the presence of the fragrance in the set, as fragrance is considered flammable goods, which cannot be shipped internationally via air. THIS OFFER IS RESTRICTED TO MOST US AND CANADIAN LOCATIONS, as well as select other locations where NAP has physical warehouses (i.e., the UK and Hong Kong). Unfortunately, NET-A-PORTER cannot ship this set internationally; exact shipping information will be available on the site once the offer goes live.
FullSizeRender.jpg

 Here is the blurb and photos from the Net-A-Porter website. There does not seem to be a special packaging with both perfume and doll, but separate boxes for each:

“Part of a collaboration with renowned perfumer Frank Voelkl, Jason Wu's Eau de Parfum is created to evoke a sense of nostalgia - it's expertly blended with Jasmine Sambac which reminds the designer of his childhood memories in Taiwan, where he would pick the flowers from a neighbor's stone wall. The blend of fresh Pink Pepper and Fig top notes are balanced by a woody silky Musk base. Fans of integrity toys will love the included doll, dressed in a replica of the crystal-embellished gown worn by Lily Aldridge to the 2017 CFDA Awards. The limited-edition figure is beautifully detailed with hand-applied eyelashes and carefully rooted glossy hair.

- Doll comes with miniature platform sandals, crystal earrings and perfume bottle
- Can be attached to Perspex stand
- Packaging is scented with Jason Wu fragrance”

W CLUB EXCLUSIVE VERSION

(applies to the blond version only)

FullSizeRender.jpg

As a special courtesy to W Club members, particularly given the shipping restrictions from his retail partner, Jason has created a special W Club exclusive hair color variation of the doll and fragrance set, which will be offered via a right-to-buy lottery this coming September. Retail Price will be $380 for doll & 3oz fragrance plus shipping (fragrance and doll not sold separately).

IMG_6273.JPG

Shipping limitations will apply for international Club members: Unfortunately, due to postal restrictions, please be aware that it will not be possible to ship a package that contains fragrance to an international destination using any air mail methods. For this reason, when the time comes for the W Club right-to-buy lottery to occur in September, The club will offer international members different options:

1- Ship the full set to a US/Canadian Address via UPS ground only;

2- Forfeit the perfume (but still pay full price of the offer), in which case we will be able to ship worldwide using regular shipping methods;

3- Have the doll shipped to you directly (as per point 2 above) and have the fragrance shipped separately to a US/Canadian address of your choice via UPS Ground.

Below are some photos of Lily Aldridge and Jason Wu from the CFDA 2017 Awards., plus the main perfume campaign image.

National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention 2018 dolls: all kinds of new!

The National Barbe Doll Collectors Convention took place in Phoenix, Arizona, from July 11th to July 14th. I don’t have any experience in covering this event and usually their convention dolls are not favourites. This year though, things changed. The convention dolls changed. In a major way. And all thanks to Carlyle Nuyera, one of Mattel’s designers. He had the task to design this year’s convention dolls and, imho, did an amazing job. Let’s read what he has to say about them.

FullSizeRender.jpg

“Presenting ‘On The Avenue’ Barbie, the 2018 National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention Doll! A few firsts for a Convention Doll; the first Curvy Convention Doll, the first Fashion gift set convention doll and the first convention doll designed by me! When I was designing the convention doll and knew that the theme was ‘On The Avenue’, my mind went to the Fashion Avenue line from the 90s, what I played with as a kid. I wanted to design a doll that allowed for one of Barbie’s earliest and purest play patterns; fashion play! Dressing your Barbie, mixing & matching pieces, styling her to create a lewk.

FullSizeRender.jpg

On The Avenue Barbie comes with silver earrings, a pastel organza top that ties in the front with long tails, a shimmering champagne organza ball gown skirt with architectural draping, a black sparkly knit bodysuit (perfect for #Beyoncé #SingleLadies lewks 👯‍♀️), a knee length skirt with layers of silver foiled pewter mesh and silver lamé, a pair of black t-strap heels and a pair of cream strappy heels!

FullSizeRender.jpg

I also want to always be forward thinking in my design approach. I wanted this Barbie to be a Collector example of how inclusive Barbie is now in terms of body type, so I designed her to use the Curvy Collector body that I first designed for Madam LaVinia Barbie. And you already knowww I love unusual face sculpts, so I used the Selma & Daria sculpts painted with side glancing eyes (#shemysterious 😜) and a beauty mark. Hope you all love her and have fun playing!”

FullSizeRender.jpg

I read a lot of positive comments about the dolls on social media, both from attendees and from non-attendees alike. The most amazing ones were from people that recognised themselves in the dolls, people with normal bodies, people of colour, ordinary people. On the other hand, lots of collectors were disappointed that the dolls were not more high fashion styled, more glamorous looking and more embellished.

My take? I love them, and I rarely like Barbie convention dolls. They are very chic and stylish, with both outfits reminding me of Isaac Mishrahi’s early collections, where he was combining full evening skirts with knit sporty tops in an way only US designers can do.

I love that they are not in the usual model muse or Silkstone body, the stiff, frozen, high fashion style body that people are used to receiving in Barbie conventions. But taking a look in most worldwide Barbie conventions, I like these two best. By far. Great job Carlyle and well done Mattel. Please give us more like these.

IFDC 2018 - four new Poppy Parker dolls unveiled!

The IFDC convention took place from 27 till 30 of June 2018 in Las Vegas. This year, as usual, Integrity Toys made the convention and companion doll’s as well as the centerpiece plus one more IT Direct doll- and they were all Poppy Parker dolls! They were unveiled late Saturday night by the company team, another small collection created by the talented David Buttry. Every attendee also received a table gift from Integrity Toys, an exclusive Poppy scaled guitar designed just for the event. The four dolls make a very coherent group, all hippie themed, appropriately enough for the psychedelic theme of the convention. I like the variety of skintones and styles, even though a Darla with a big afro would have looked better than another black Poppy. They have different feet between them, the first has the high heeled foot, while the rest of them have the articulated foot to better match their shoe style. Always remember that lower legs are interchangeable and can pop out to be replaced with another type, if you desire. Regarding the new hand sculpts introduced for this collection: meh. They have no use than maybe one or two poses and that’s it. Plus they do not look as realistic as her normal hands, but more cartoony and almost weirdly squished. What do you think?

Since the number of dolls made is larger than the attendees, the remainder is to be available through lottery to W Club members only. So if you are not a member, you will have to try the secondary market for them. The lottery will be held approximately in ten days and members have until the 25th of July to pay the dolls. Let’s see the dolls that were presented.

I like this one, although, as mentioned earlier, a Darla with a huge afro would have looked better for me. Doll and outfit are great and would make a nice addition to the collection. Love the hat, it is very Jacquemus and will match other summer styles well. I’m still undecided about which doll I will enter the lottery for, but this one is ahead at the moment.

A beautiful girl with lovely colouring and a cute outfit. The hat and sandals are again great. I’m a bit on the fence for this one as I already have the Swinging London Poppy that has the same hairstyle but more intense red hair and paler make up. Hmmmm...

This was the centerpiece doll so her edition is the smallest, only 350 dolls. I’m not entering for this one, the dress print reminds me of a couple of previous dresses and her colouring matches a couple of my Poppies too. Easy pass.

If her hair colour was darker, she’d be a dead ringer for Lana Del Rey, flowers on the head etc.  She’s beautiful and has the Hungarian skintone that makes her different from blond Poppies with pale make up I have. Her earrings and bag are gorgeous. I’m not crazy about the dress though and the braids in her hair mean less versatility.

As I mentioned earlier, all IFDC attendees received an exclusive bonus souvenir gift, a 60's themed guitar designed to fit with this quartet of dolls. This accessory is not available online,but  there's a picture of the centerpiece doll with the guitar in-hand.
