Funny Face: A Woman Who Thinks (Marion / Dovima)

It was about time I started photographing and posting the Funny Face dolls, who have been arriving home one after another in all their elegance and finesse. I must say that the dolls are exactly or even better than the prototypes and it is a unique treat opening their beautiful packaging.

I had written, in the post about their presentation, that "A Woman Who Thinks" is the best doll of the bunch. Her arrival confirmed my opinion. She uses the Anja sculpt to great effect. If you have seen the film, you know this is Marion, the model posing as "A Woman Who Thinks", the new target group and inspiration for Quality magazine. Marion is played by Dovima, a real model, and one of the best models ever. She parodies herself, and it is a great treat to see her in a film, as most of the images we have from her heyday are photographs.

The doll comes with two outfits and their respective accessories. She is already dressed with the black narrow dress with the irregular cut out neckline, which is a good approximation of the real one. I love the grainy fabric and it is stretchy enough to pose in. Unfortunately, using the Victoire/BoD body means that there is no waist joint, so the posing is a bit limited. I think that for this doll, the FR body would have been a bit better. The dress fastens in the back with hooks, which are a bit difficult to fasten as they are black on black.

I was surprised to find out that she can stand on her own. The nice leather black pumps help with that. Black stretchy gloves and a pair of "diamond" stud earrings complete the look. She is wearing pantyhose, as all women did in that era.

Her short hairdo should have been a bit less fluffy - the real model had her hair much closer to her scalp. The make up is great, the blues on her lids match her eyes and the red lipstick and nails are divine and era-appropriate.

The second outfit from the film is the one called She-bop. It is a yellow gown with a matching hat that has a green ribbon and an orange crown. It is impossible to find a photo of it on-line so I had to make a capture from the film. In it I noticed that the actual dress could have a green fabric panel at the back to match the ones from the hat. The doll dress does not.

The dress has a lot of fabric. There is a satin yellow fabric under the layers of billowing yellow chiffon over it. The draping on her bust is nicely made and the two satin straps complete the look. The dress also has a slim satin belt that fastens in the back with a pearl and a loop. The dress closes with a zipper and a hook on top (which I was unable to fasten). The shoes are yellow leather pumps, same as the black ones.

This look has a "diamond" bracelet to finish it off. Again I had a hard time keeping this on her wrist, the fastening is a bit loose and it kept falling off. Dear Integrity, not all of us collectors have tiny fingers to deal with this stuff!

The hat looks like a flower from the back.

I was really happy they included this dress with the doll, even though it barely registers in the film. The set is incredibly well made and looks very faithful to the real costumes. I love the doll and will definitely photograph her in more vintage looking stuff as soon as I can.

Tonner Doll Mainline release 2013: DeeAnna Denton

This is one of my favourite Tonner Doll lines. I managed to get one doll from this last year and she is gorgeous. It seems that it is also getting better. This year there are two dressed dolls, two basics and two outfits.

The first dressed doll is of course DeeAnna Denton™ with her 16" curvaceous body in the Tyler skin tone. She has green painted eyes with applied eyelashes and golden blonde rooted saran hair, She is wearing a black hat with faux fur trim and a red bow, a white jacket with black beaded buttons, black faux fur cuffs, and black and white faux fur collar. It is cinched with a black patent leather belt over a black pencil skirt.  Nude pantyhose, red bead earrings, a red beaded necklace, red gloves and red patent leather shoes complete the look. She comes with a stand.

Period perfect, this is a gorgeous doll, even though her earrings are a bit simple regarding the rest of the outfit. She should have had a bag too, as would be appropriate for the era.

The second dressed doll is Peggy Harcourt™ on a 16" curvaceous body in the Tyler skin tone. She has purple painted eyes with applied eyelashes and pale blonde rooted saran hair. Her outfit consists of an iridescent purple skirt, matching purple and fuchsia top with gold studs, one pink and one purple glove, rhinestone bracelets, a rhinestone necklace, rhinestone earrings, nude pantyhose, purple faux suede shoes, an iridescent purple and fuchsia hat and a purple faux fur shawl. She comes with a stand.

Peggy is my favourite sculpt from this line and she looks gorgeous yet again. The outfit is a bit outré but is period perfect, although we still miss a handbag to go. The turban looks a bit smashed, I hope the production ones look better. I love the draping on the top. As they do not describe it as a jacket, it probably opens on the back and not on the front.

One basic doll is DeeAnna Denton™. She has brown painted eyes with applied eyelashes and a pale blonde removable saran wig. She has the Tyler skin tone (and always the curvaceous body). She sports a light purple teddy with ruffle trim and garters over nude pantyhose and purple molded plastic shoes. She comes with a stand.

This one looks better than the dressed DeeAnna! The teddy and garters are a nice touch. We have seen the molded plastic shoes before on basic Tyler dolls. And in the same colour.

Of course the second basic doll is Peggy Harcourt™ with the 16" curvaceous body in a Tyler skin tone. She has green painted eyes with applied eyelashes and a mink removable saran wig. She has a teal teddy with ruffle trim and garters over nude pantyhose and teal molded plastic shoes. She comes with a stand.

Look at those gorgeous green eyes! She has almost the same colouring as my own Peggy, Short N'Sassy but with green eyes (even better) and lighter brows. If I did not have SNS, I would get her in an instant. They should have made the outfit in teal, it would look so much better.

The first outfit is a floral print dress with white ribbon trim at the waist. It has a white crinoline petticoat. Accessories include a white hat with faux flowers, white gloves, faux pearl earrings, a faux pearl necklace and black faux leather shoes.

While the dressed dolls are wearing winter ensembles, the solo outfits are decidedly summery. Light and airy, again this is period perfect apart from a missing bag.

The last outfit is a peach dress with white embroidered organza overlay and an attached belt. Accessories include a white hat with peach tulle and faux flower decoration, matching faux leather shoes, a faux pearl necklace, faux pearl earrings and white gloves.

She is without a bag again. A dreamy confection this one, it could also use nude pantyhose. No lady of that era would be caught dead without it.

Tonner Doll 2013 Mainline release: Marilyn Monroe

Two new dolls and one outfit are the newest additions to the Marilyn Monroe line by Tonner Doll. I like that they are relasing more and more of her outfits and hope to be able to buy some in the future.

The first dressed doll has of course the Marilyn Monroe head sculpt on a 16" Starlet body with the Tyler skin tone. She has blue painted eyes with applied eyelashes and blonde rooted saran hair. She is wearing an  off white and brown dress, with an off white and brown matching turban. Off white gloves, a brown belt with gold stud, rhinestone earrings, nude pantyhose and a pair of brown faux leather shoes complete the look. She comes with a stand.

I still cannot get used to the MM sculpt by Tonner. I still find it harsh and missing that ethereal "baby" undertone that she had in most of her photos and films. This could be used for Madonna or Jane Russel with much more success. The outfit though is gorgeous. It is a Travilla design (he did lots of her films) and is from the iconic 1953 film "How To Marry A Millionaire". Below are some captures from the film as well as her costume fitting photograph.

In the scene she is with Alexander D'Arcy, who played a phoney millionaire.

So it seems we are missing the drop earring and rhinestone bracelet plus the bag. I wish they could have made her turban less puffy.

The second doll is a basic one.She has a black bathing suit, nude pantyhose (why?), black faux leather shoes with clear platforms. She comes with a stand.

This is Marilyn from 1952's "Monkey Business", the scene in the bathing suit. The doll looks even less than Marilyn here and more like Madonna. Why is she in pantyhose? She does not wear that in the film and not even in publicity shots. I love the shoes, they look fantastic, Below are some photos of the star in this swimsuit.

It seems that this (above) is the photo that inspired the doll. They missed the number 7 on the swimsuit. You can see her below with her co-star in the film, Cary Grant.

This is the sole outfit of this line. It features a white blouse under a short red coat with faux pearl button and a black skirt. White gloves and black faux leather shoes complete the look.

This is an outfit from the 1953 film "Niagara". very faithful to the original. Below are some photos with Marilyn wearing this outfit. The real shoes had much more intricate detail.

Tonner Doll Mainline 2013 release: Scarlett and American Model 22"

I am a big fan of Gone With The Wind and so I had to have Scarlett dolls - one of my first ever dolls was the Franklin Mint Scarlett. I have several of the Tonner ladies too, plus Rhett and Melanie, so I could not leave out the sole release of the GWTW Tonner Doll line. To complete this post, I will include the 22"American Model releases, because the era (but not the size) of their outfits fits Scarlett to a T. There is of course a 22" Scarlett release as well but there are no photos of her yet.

This is the only Scarlett 16"release on the mainline so far. She is a dressed doll (there are so many dressed Scarlett dolls by Tonner that Franklin Mint must have less than half of them by now).  She has of course the Vivien Leigh portrait sculpt  on a 16" Tyler bending wrist body with the Tyler skin tone. She has the famous green painted eyes and  brown rooted saran hair. She is wearing a  red dress with black trim and red beads and a gold brooch at the collar and bronze hair decoration. She sports a white petticoat, nude pantyhose with attached panties and red taffeta shoes to match. She comes with her stand.

There is no description on the Tonner website but fans of the film already know this is the dress Scarlett is wearing as Mrs. Kennedy, when trying to convinve Ashley to come work for her. The hairdo is not a match as you can see below.

The brooch at the neck is not similar either (where is the red stone at the middle?) but it looks intricate. It should have sat on top of the collar though, not beneath it.

The rest of the outfit is a perfect match. I cannot remember what she was holding at the photo below.

You can see how the bronze hair ornament is supposed to look like in the film capture below, although no photo fro the company shows it.

The other Scarlett release is a 22"version of the wedding dress dol, but no photos of her are available yet. She would be a sized up version of her 2012 16"release by Tonner, seen below:

Tonner Doll Mainline 2013 release: Cami & Jon

Cami & Jon is the youthful fashion line for Tonner Dolls. It must be popular as it had the largest number of dolls and outfits in it, plus a new sculpt, an Asian character. There are three basic dolls, one dressed doll and four outfits!

She comes with a stand.

She looks fantastic but why oh why don't we have a face pic without the sunglasses? How is someone supposed to buy a doll without seeing her face? This time though there is A BAG! Finally! And a cute one too! Fab shoes.

She is wearing red shorts with black stitching, a black tank top with a black and white stripe star decoration and red stitching and black elastic strap shoes with a red platform. She comes with a stand.

The "theme" running through this collection seems to be navy inspired with all the stars and stripes. Very cute.

She wears black shorts with a white star decoration and red stitching, a red and white striped shirt with black stitching and black elastic strap shoes with a red platform. She comes with a stand.

I like the previous outfit better but this wig colour is way more beautiful. All the outfits of the basic dolls plus one of the separate outfits could really mix and match.

Tonner always does great Asian sculpts and this one is no exception. I might be getting her if she is released in a dressed doll version, although I do not have another doll with this body. She is smiling too! Love her.

The first of four outfits is the one that I wrote above, that matches the ones from the basic dolls. It consists of a tan and black stripe skirt, a tan bodysuit with star decoration and black and red trim, a red faux leather belt, a red jacket with black trim and gold buttons and black elastic strap platform shoes.

Two things: it needed a bag (to really mean business  and the shoes should have been different than the basci doll ones. Spectator pumps maybe.

The second outfit consists of a green, orange, and gold lace dress with a ruffled bodice, a metallic bronze faux leather belt, orange tights, gold bracelets, gold rhinestone earrings and gold faux leather shoes with a sculpted heel.

The lace detail is amazing. I like the colours as well, the Autumn palette.

The shoes look a bit weird, like they are spray painted. Are the heels bendy? I hope the production pair is better than this one.

Price $89.99

The third outfit is a light purple lace ruffle dress. It comes with gold faux leather shoes, a gold spiral bracelet and matching gold spiral necklace.

This looks cute (but almost like a knit dress). The winners here are the bracelet and necklace. They look like Greek world renowned jeweller Zolotas would have designed them.

A Day Away - Outfit

The last outfit consists of a black jacket with faux fur cuffs and a black patent leather belt, cream and gold rib knit hooded sweater with black faux fur trim, black velveteen stirrup pants and black faux leather boots with faux fur trim.

This is the odd one out - a winter ensemble in a summer collection. But it looks really good and funky. I bet it will be a hit. This Cami & Jon collection is one of the best ever.
