V.JOHN releases his first doll - Devoted Affair Molly Hayward

Most fashion doll collectors are already familiar with the name V.JOHN - they snap up his limited edition fashions for their dolls the moment they become available. Now he has designed his very own resin doll, named Molly Hayward and she is a limited edition of 20, available on his website. She is a beautiful doll with a distinct personality and a mixed Asian/American style. I love that he picked copper/auburn hair for his first doll. She looks good posing too.

She-Ra exclusive SDCC Mattel doll - with a stolen design for her sword

It has been a few days since images of the exclusive San Diego ComicCon exclusive She-Ra doll from Mattel surfaced on-line, first in USA-Today and later in various websites and forums. She looks impressive and has a new body design that is somewhere between the Made-to-Move bodies and a superhero sculpt. She will retail for $75 and of course you can only get it if you visit ComicCon.

She has different outfits and accessories that are interchangeable, offering a variety of looks.

The thing is that Mattel (or more precisely, the designer working for Mattel who did this doll) has copied the gold sword from a professional Greek comic artist, Yannis Rubus Rubulias, who had done a fan-art depiction of She-Ra back in 2011.

See what they did?

The resemblance is uncanny. It is not the first time we see this kind of copying in the doll world but a major company doing it is the icing on the cake. Whoever designed the doll should have contacted Yannis to ask for permission and copyright. What do you think?

The third line unveiled this month from Integrity Toys is Jem And The Holograms On-Stage collection. I liked Riot a lot but he should have had a guitar (or whatever instrument he plays) with him to complete the look. If you're doing a gift set, do it properly. And the price surely can cover that. I love the complete set and would probably buy it if it included his guitar as well - without it it feels incomplete. The outfit is gorgeous and could be of use with some of the ladies too with the proper mix and match.

Integrity Toys 2016 unveil: The Industry

The Industry is a much anticipated new line from Integrity Toys - Tulabelle goes 12". There were many collectors who loved the Tulabelle line but were afraid to venture into the 16" doll world. So now there is a line that transfers the audacious Tulabelle style into 12". There was only one doll unveiled, which looks like testing the waters to me. She is probably sold out from pre-orders in the official dealers right now but if you want one, contact them pronto. She looks nice but a bit tame for me. I was expecting her a bit more outrageous in style. The sculpt looks interesting, much better than her 1:4 scale incarnation.

Tulabelle wears 70s gaucho pants, platform boots, a sheer chiffon blouse and a black and white striped "fur" trimmed coat. A silver clutch, studded bracelets and thunderbolt earrings complete the outfit. Tulabelle™ is a fully articulated 12-inch doll with fully rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. For adult collectors ages 15 and up only. This doll cannot stand alone; a doll stand is included. David Buttry, the doll's designer, notes that as a design choice (not a budgetary decision), they chose to use a very fine, micro-velcro closure on the front placket of Tulabelle's shirt. The reason given for that is that the fabric is very sheer and they did not want to have a visual distraction with the use of hooks and loops, so the decision was made to use velcro. I know some collectors who immediately associate velcro with cheap playline clothes so it will  be interesting to see the reaction. It looks nice in the photos.

THE INDUSTRY doll has a brand new, freshly engineered body sculpt. This new body can be completely disassembled and has interchangeable hands. This feature was decided to help dress dolls in tight, form-fitting clothes and eliminate unnecessary closures that add bulk to scaled clothing whenever possible. THE INDUSTRY body is a completely new body sculpt, except for the hands. The arms, legs, torso, and bust are all new sculpts. THE INDUSTRY shares Poppy's hands. The foot is not the same as the Dynamite Girl foot but a new more delicate, detailed foot with a slightly different arch, although within the same size as the Dynamite Girl foot. The new foot allows her to share shoes with other fashion dolls currently on the market. The bottom leg is removable and in the future, some of THE INDUSTRY dolls will have a brand new articulated ankle and foot. This will enable some dolls to have flat feet and others to have a high heel foot in the same collection. The bust size is similar to the current NU. Face bust size. The doll will have a brand new packaging style designed by Alain Tremblay that includes a portrait picture of the doll with each new release. Below is a photo of the nude body:

It looks like a fusion of Nu-Face and Poppy or Dynamite Girls and Poppy bodies. From the very top of the head to the toe, the body is almost 12 1/4" tall. The body is slightly shorter than current NU. Face but taller than Poppy Parker.

Lady Stardust is a direct reference to David Bowie and his song from his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Her outfit also references the one Bowie is wearing in this seminal photo by Terry O' Neill while preparing the artwork of his 1974 album Diamond Dogs in London.

Integrity Toys 2016 unveil: Poppy Parker - The BonBon collection

A bit later than usual (a week to ten days later than last year I think) comes the first wave of new releases from Integrity Toys. Poppy Parker is the major line is this wave and it is of course the BonBon collection, samples of which we got to see earlier in the year: the upgrade Poppy (Ma Petite Fleur)  and the W Club first doll, Ooh La La. As a refresher, let me remind you that the concept of the collection is that Poppy is on her first trip to Paris for modelling and so, as David Buttry told the W Club in the video accompanying the release, it draws elements from Parisian couture as well as from the very first Poppy Parker collections. So they use not only a new screening (like the one of the W Club doll) but also those from the first collections - remember those dolls are still very sought after. The dolls are available to pre-order from IT dealers except two of the dolls, which will be available later through lottery.

I have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed reading the presentation email. It's not that the dolls are not beautiful but I only wanted one to join my collection - and that one is due for a lottery in the coming months. I think I expected something different design-wise, more like ooh La La and less like Parisian mannequins of the early 60s (which A Funny Face has already covered for me to perfection). I am sure people will love the collection, as it has been a while since the designs had the early part of the decade as an inspiration, but to me it simply did not click. I will be writing my particular thoughts about each doll below - lets fly to Paris!

According to her serial number, this is the 100th Poppy version released by Integrity. I was expecting them to have a very special doll with that number, but it seems they did not consider it important. This one, while looking great, simply reminds me of one of the Mood Changers Poppies, down to the colour of her dress. If I did not have that one already, I might be getting this one, but now it simply does not interest me at all., And yes, that's the travel train case we have seen before in Sabrina, albeit in a different colour and print.

This is fluffy and cute all-right, but I don't do fluffy or cute in my collection. The teddy bear is a nice touch as is the diary and I love the ring. The hair-style I could live without. The outfit was inspired by one David saw in the film "The Love God?". I guess the pink one?

The silhouette of this dress does not photograph well. I wonder how it will look in real life. I do not like the brocade pattern at all, but the colour combinations are lovely. Great jewellery set. The shoes look poor for this type of outfit. she needed something more glamorous here.

I would get this one if the polka dots were smaller (I know, I'm picky) and the top tier of the skirt (the polka dot part) sat better on the tulle layers. There is a special construction at the back but it gets lost in black. The dress is actually a copy of a Lanvin dress designed by Antonio Castillo in 1957, now in the V&A museum, donated by Stella, Lady Ednam (see photo below).

This is a case where the accessories are more interesting than the dress itself. I love the jewellery and bag very much but the dress looks a bit simple for them. Maybe if it her a couture detail at the front of the bodice and the train was double-faced (white on the top. purple at the bottom for example) it would look more spectacular. The shoes could have been better - why not high heeled sling backs? Or a jewelled buckle on them? As for the doll, the intensity of the eye-shadow is off-putting. The lipstick looks a lot like those used in the era.

I love this doll. It reminds me of Chanel Couture so much, while it is actually homage to a Dior 1963 dress designed by Marc Bohan (see last photo). Doll, outfit, accessories are all perfect. David said it is the grandest gown they have made for Poppy so far and I agree. I hope to win her at the lottery. Perfection!
