She might be called Enamorada but I’m not in love with her. The doll is lovely to look at and fits the Latina type more than most Natalia incarnations lately, so that is a plus. Her make up and hairstyle are fierce. But the gown looks like a fashion school graduate’s attempt at making an alternative mermaid dress and failing miserably. Or a Runway Project designer that failed to understand the week’s assignment which was “Hollywood Siren gets the Galliano treatment”. The skirt could have been worked in a completely different way regarding the piecing and stitching - they have made so many gorgeous mermaid type gowns before. The corset looks bland compared to the skirt - imagine it with circular stitching on each cup, how much better it would have looked. It’s not by accident that the gown is less photographed than the lingerie. The accessories are nothing we have not seen before in other dolls. Her lingerie is nice but not exceptional. If the doll was wearing something different, I might have been tempted to get her. Not now.

The Moschino Spring-Summer 2021 fashion show was a puppet affair - and had everyone swooning

We saw dolls becoming models in the July shows this year, one of the creative ideas designers had to overcome restrictions due to the pandemic. Inspired by Théâtre de la Mode, Maria-Grazia Chiuri showed miniature versions of the Dior Autumn/Winter 2020 collection, much like those shown in the Maison’s incredible fashion exhibition a year ago. Walter Van Beirendonck showed his Spring Summer 2021 men’s collection on dolls made by the talented Eli Effenberger from Meenangerie dolls. So it did not seem weird that Jeremy Scott had the same inspiration for his Moschino 2021 Spring Summer Ready To Wear show - it fits the whimsical spirit of the brand very well. But he took it a step further: he used puppets instead of dolls.

It is not the first time puppets, or more precisely, marionettes, were used for a fashion show. In 1960, marionettes were used alongside real human models on the runway at the Cypress Club in London, as you can see below.

Jeremy Scott talked to US Vogue about the process of creating the whimsical runway show. He has worked with Barbie in the past, even did a complete collection inspired by her. He loves dolls!

He also did a segment for CNN Style:

His original inspiration was, as for others too, the Théâtre de la Mode mannequins. As he has worked with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop (The Muppets, Dark Crystal) before, and they all were in Los Angeles due to the pandemic, he decided to work with them to make the show. The marionettes were sculpted with computers and then made in L.A. by the Henson team, while the painstakingly detailed outfits were made in Italy by the Moschino team, and then sent to the US for the filming. Most of the outfits were made in human size too, as we can see in photos posted on the company’s Instagram. You can see the entire collection here.

What is a fashion show without its front row? Not content with making the models into puppets, Scott had the Henson people make a series of esteemed fashion editors into marionettes, sitting along the runway on golden chairs like they do during couture week. You could see Anna Wintour (holding her invite), Edward Enninful (British Vogue), Hamish Bowles (Vogue US), Samira Nasr (Harper’s Bazaar US), Vanessa Friedman (NY Times, jotting notes down her notebook no less), Carlyne Cerf De Dudzelee , Anna Dello Russo (Vogue Japan), Nina Garcia (Elle US), Angelica Cheung (Vogue China), model Brandon Good. For the rest, we have “inside information” that two more front row attendees were Lupita Nyong’o and Kerry Washington, while the blonde lady taking a snapshot with her phone could be Scott’s friend Lizzie Widdiecombe from New Yorker magazine. Below is a panoramic photo on which I have written the audience members I could identify.

NNEA7710.JPG

Below you can see a slideshow of close ups from the front row. If anyone has concrete information about any of the so far unidentified ladies, please let me know so I can add them.

Jeremy said about the clothes: “When I opened the boxes when the little outfits for the puppets arrived, I was shocked and befuddled and tickled pink!” All the work on the mini outfits has been done by hand, and even the jacquard was scaled down and rewoven to marionette proportions. “It’s filled with love, it’s so delicate and intricate,” says Scott of the workmanship that has gone into the collections – both big and small. “It’s close to looking classical but not exactly. I wanted to play with all the subtleties but make them bold at the same time.”

IMG_8121.JPG

He designed all the front row clothes as well: “I had to capture everyone’s unique personality and then give it a little twist,” says Scott, of designing Moschino outfits for a front row of marionettes that included Vogue editors including Edward Enninful and Anna Wintour, the New York Times journalist Vanessa Friedman (who at one point can be seen jotting down thoughts in a notebook) and Scott’s regular stylist collaborator Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele. “For Edward’s suit I made sure it had the British flag. I thought, if I was making something custom, what would I imagine for him that would respect him in his world, but give a little nod that I was playing?”

IMG_E8155.JPG

The marionettes were 30-inch rall, about 76cm, and the ones from the front row were all sent to their real life counterparts. The rest of them along with the outfits are now all in the Moschino archive in Milan. To end this post, here are some backstage photos. They even made the outfit board!

Shantommo for Integrity Toys - Ryan Liang's Such A Gem Dania Zarr available for W Club members

Late last year, Integrity Toys announced the winner of their 2019 International Integrity Toys Design Competition and now the W Club presents the production doll based on competition winner Ryan Liang's winning entry, named "Such A Gem" Dania Zarr™. According to the rules of the competition, the winning design, which was voted on by W Club members, went through various adjustments to make it production ready, while preserving the spirit of Ryan's original design, alongside the character choice that W Club members voted on. Now W Club members get to pre-order her and have the right to pre-order as many dolls as they like.

Ryan Liang is well known to most doll collectors as the person behind Shantommo, designing gorgeous clothes for dolls of both 1:6 and 1:4 scale. I love his style and designs and the quality of his work is exquisite. His award was much deserved and the resulting doll is gorgeous. Her colouring brings to mind a young Elisabeth Taylor. Her versatile dress is in haute couture territory - and this style of glamorous chic is creeping up again in the work of many young up and coming designers, inspired by 80s French Haute Couture. It must have been the fastest pre-order I’ve ever done!.

A few words about Ryan from the club email:

Born and currently living in Malaysia, when Ryan Liang first saw Integrity Toys’s FR line back in 2012, he was hooked and he immediately started collecting! As time passed, influenced and assisted by his mom (who is a tailor), Ryan learned how to sew and design garments. This eventually led to the creation of doll outfits and now, dolls act as his canvas of choice to express his visions and passion towards fashion!

Integrity Toys Mini Capsule Collections 2020 reveal pt..4: Fashion Royalty - Maison FR Paris

The fourth and final reveal was the Fashion Royalty dolls. Jessy Ayala designed two ladies for the Maison FR Paris collection, which, as he mentioned during the presentation, includes the upgrade Eugenia doll and will include one more - probably one of the remaining W Club exclusive dolls. Both dolls were surprises: Korinne made her long awaited comeback and Veronique sports her 1.0 sculpt for this round. Both are available from retailers and from what I am hearing, Vero is selling out fast despite the large edition. She is fifteen dollars cheaper than Korinne. So if we get a bag at US$160.00, we could have gotten one with the Monarch guys, no?

Korinne is finally back! I always regretted not getting her first edition, but I had a budget to adhere to - don’t we all? Then she kind of disappeared from the face of the earth, until now! And what a comeback! She is dazzling! A beautiful gown (even though I’m weary of mermaid gowns, this one looks nice) in a gorgeous colour that compliments her Hungarian skin tone well. The accessories are TDF - mimicking the Secret Garden Eugenia ones! And that face and screening! I’m so happy I was confirmed for her!

Veronique, in her 1.0 sculpt, looks a lot like the most famous Greek daytime television show host, Eleni Menegaki, in her L’Oreal campaign style - google her and see if you agree. And that sums it up for me. Plus, whoever is writing the storylines (Alain, is that you?): you DO NOT go to a front row fashion show seat dressed in a Chanel suit. Not even at a Chanel show. That’s 2nd row dressing at best - third row more like it. For me the best 1.0 sculpt appearance is still, and will always be, Lights, Camera, Royal Vero.

Integrity Toys Mini Capsule Collections 2020 reveal pt..3: Meteor - Le Chic

The third mini capsule collection revealed in Saturday’s Integrity Toys event was Meteor. Vaughn presented two gorgeous dolls - one is a new character and one was Zuri in a smashing new look. Both are available for dealers, but with the limited editions, they might sell out quickly. I’m betting this would have given us even more gorgeous dolls had Vaughn been able to make a full collection with all the line’s characters. The 70s inspiration is a great fit both to the designer’s talent and the line and it shows.

I am willing to bet that Navia’s sculpt is a failed Colette 2.0 attempt used as a new character - they are practically twins. Not loving the head shape or the print. The glasses are cute but she is missing a bag. I’m puzzled by the use of FR body instead of Nu Face, which would fit the character much better IMHO. She might be coming out but she’s definitely not coming home. The dress is almost an exact copy (boots and all) of the opening number from Fausto Puglisi’s Fall 2019 RTW collection - the print was inspired by an Ottoman carpet he picked up at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, as Puglisi said back then.

This is Donna Summer in doll form! When asked, Vaughn said he got inspiration for other 70s singers too (the Every Woman title surely refers to the Chaka Khan song I’m Every Woman) but she looks so much like Donna with that make up and hairstyle and the open mouth, it’s uncanny. I’m happy I got confirmed for her, she’s Hot Stuff! There is a confusion about her outfit: during the presentation, Vaugh said it is one piece, but the description from IT says blouse and palazzo pants. Will update with more info when available.
