Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 1: Welcome doll and W Club Upgrade dolls

It’s that time of the year again - Integrity Toys convention has begun! And this year it is the 25th anniversary of the company, so the convention is special. Also it is the first ever virtual one because of the pandemic. This of course has given the chance to more people to participate in it, even if they do not have the actual main convention ticket. Anyone who has the W Club event or the Upgrade package can attend all events (save the afterparty on the last day) . I’m happy to say that I am one of the people attending, even though I do not have the main convention ticket, so this year I have an inside view of everything unfolding, to the extend that time difference allows.

Integrity_Toys_2020_Legendary_convention_main_header.png

The platform of the online event opened for everyone at 10.00 EST - which was 17.00 for me, so quite convenient. The interface was similar to most platforms for online exhibitions and events currently available on the market (I know because it’s the sector I work in) so it felt familiar and easy to navigate right off the bat. I hope it is like this for everyone! The first event we could all attend was a welcome chat with the Percy family, which was an easy way of saying hello to everyone and ask lots of questions about everything convention related. After about an hour (and overcoming some technical glitches that caused a small delay), we were able to watch the first presentation in the convention auditorium: Alain and Carol welcomed us via video (pre-filmed): they talked about the event and the various technical stuff and how people could make their shopping afterwards. Then we were able to see the upgrade dolls unveiled, so let’s start with the amazing duo of Veronique Perrin and Adele Makeda, who were the original Fashion Royalty debut dolls back in the day,

I’m so happy I preordered the upgrade dolls as they are AMAZING! Look at her face! Her hairstyle! Her dress! The face reminds me a lot of Glamazon. Love her. Love the polka dot detail. And did you notice that she has a bag? Yeap, in this convention, dolls come with bags. Read about the dress inspiration here.

Veronique is gorgeous as well - her platinum hair, blue eyes and perfect make up match her black outfit to a T. She’s the ideal counterpart to Adele, yin and yang. They make an awesome set of dolls. Alain said they have quite a long waiting list for them and that was just from the sketches.

After the presentation of the two upgrade dolls, we saw another pre-recorded segment of Alain interviewing Percy Newsome, the Integrity Toys founder and CEO. He talked about the creation of the company and how it operates, while sharing funny memories with Alain. Then it was time to present,,, a gift, so they showed us a doll-sized IT T-shirt, like the ones you could buy for yourself from their shop. But then, they said that we need a doll to wear it and out came the welcome doll, which is Janay!

David Buttry was inspired by Carrie Bradshaw for the outfit (Carry On, right?) and of course Janay is the doll that started it all for Integrity Toys. It is fitting that she gets to be the welcome doll on the 25th anniversary of the company. She was not in any of the emails sent so far by the company, so here are more photos from their Instagram account.

The IFDC 2020 dolls were unveiled - Poppy goes Vegas!

As with many things this year, the 2020 IFDC Convention was delayed until next year due to the ongoing pandemic. What was not delayed (well, not much, considering), is the set of dolls based on this year's theme that were already designed and made. David Buttry and Vaughn Sawyers created a collection of four Poppy Parker dolls based on this yeat’s IFDC theme and they were revealed first to the would-be attendees and then to W Club and the rest of the world. As usual, a portion of the total edition size of each doll has been set aside for the W Club, while the bulk goes to the people that had registered for the convention.

Am I the only one getting Monaco Royale Vanessa vibes from this one? She’s Vaughn’s design, inspired by his 2003 IFDC Midnight In Monaco Véronique doll. The gown is a bit awkward for Poppy, as if she’s into her mother’s dress to play. Cute but pass. Lady Luck of course brings to mind the “Luck Be A Lady” song from the Guys And Dolls musical.

She’s the yang to Sizzling in Paris yin, so she’s probably designed by David Buttry. Beautiful doll and a very showgirl-y outfit. If it only had more feathers instead of tulle! Love the mask!

For me she’s hands down the most beautiful of the bunch. And despite the weird style of the cape, I like the outfit too, although I’d rather it had a shawl collared cape. Missing a necklace though - just imagine a pearl chocker with a jewelled clasp. This one was probably designed by Vaughn. The title brings to mind Rita Moreno singing (dubbed by Leona Gordon) “We Kiss In The Shadow” from “The King And I” film. The doll does look like a young Rita, no?

She’s obviously a David Buttry design, bearing lots of his favourites and things we have seen before in different iterations (like the mesh dress). Beautiful doll and lovely colours. The tote bag rocks! And of course the name references the Viva Las Vegas! Elvis Presley film, while the doll surely brings to mind the inimitable Ann Margret.

The upgrade dolls for the LEGENDARY Integrity Toys 2020 convention have been revealed and look fab - as sketches at least

As you might have read or heard by now, this year’s Integrity Toys convention, named LEGENDARY, will be held online only, due to the pandemic. There was a huge kerfuffle with registering for it, as the website crashed under the onslaught of potential attendees and the whole situation was sorted out during the following week. An online convention certainly gives more people the chance to attend, as it is easier for people outside the US, so the amount of people trying to grab hold of a ticket must have been overwhelming (I tried and did not make it, reaching only the pay now button stage). But, W Club members have the opportunity to attend anyway, as they can register for the two (instead of the usual one) upgrade dolls available for the convention, plus they can register for the online W Club event as well, thus gaining access to the online events of the convention too. Sketches of the two dolls have been released and they look elegant, chic and very promising.

I love everything about this doll! Elegant and very Parisian haute couture - a proper lady who lunches. Both dresses reference the Petite Robe dresses from 2004 - this is from the La Petite Robe Blanche outfit available at the MFD FR 2004 convention (see above).

2004 91033 Fashion La Petite Robe Noire.jpg

This one is of course based on La Petite Robe Noire outfit from 2004, which is still quite sought after by collectors as the dress comes with four different pairs of shoes, four bags plus the scarf and glasses, making it more versatile. I just wish they had used the original Veronique sculpt as it is the 25th IT anniversary convention and it would make a fitting tribute.

Happy 61st birthday Barbie!

It’s the 61st birthday for the famous fashion doll, Barbie, or Barbara Millicent Roberts, as is her full name. To honour the anniversary, let’s check out some collector Barbies that were unveiled these past few days.

First up is the Japanese Barbie Convention 2020 doll. The convention was cancelled due to coronavirus, but the doll will be sent to those that were to attend. Designed by Carlyle Nuera, she is a vision in red. The concept for convention Barbies this year is Chromatic Couture and Japan got the red one. The sculpt is madam LaVinia and she’s dressed in a faux leather bralette, satin palazzo pants and a red tulle bodysuit. Her hair and make up are all red too. This is my favourite of the two convention dolls.

The second doll is the Paris Fashion Doll Festival 2020 exclusive Barbie, unveiled this past weekend in Paris. She’s in total blue, part of the Chromatic Couture concept. Again designed by Carlyle Nuera, she has the Mari face sculpt and is dressed in a high-low bubble hem gown with puff sleeves made of two-tone metallic blue taffeta, with a powder tulle blue overlay and clear blue jewellery & shoes. Her make up and hair are all in shades of blue.

Best_To_A_Tea_BFMC_Silkstone.png

And finally, sketches of some of the last BFMC dolls were revealed in the past days. This collection is on its last year and Rober Best is trying to end it in the best possible way. The first one is Best To A Tea. She’s wearing a Chanel style suit. We have seen lots of them on Silkstone dolls and they are all lovely, so I guess this one will be too.

The_Best_Look_BFMC_Silkstone_giftset.jpg

There will be a giftset released too, named The Best Look - a play on the designer’s name perhaps? The sketches look gorgeous, even though the outfits look a lot like past releases. A redhead in grey or black will look smashing. Wondering if she will be in the latest, articulated Silkstone body or the original one. I know most BFMC collectors would prefer the latter.

Integrity Toys 2019 Convention Day 3 - Jason Wu Gala and convention doll

The last evening of the Live From The Fashion Week convention was dedicated to the Jason Wu Gala. Guests entered the ballroom and saw the evening's centerpiece doll, Ethereal Beauty Vanessa Perrin, adorning the tables. Jason Wu himself was attending, as the convention doll would be designed by him. The winners of the convention design competition were also announced:

Diorama Design Competition:

People's Choice: Lani Billitti

Judge's Choice: Kelly Rinaldi

Doll Design Challenge:

People's Choice: Sinuhe Guzman

Judge's Choice: Osvaldo Vasquez (aka "Ovaz")

The winners of the OOAK dolls designed by the IT team just for the raffle room were picked and the host city of next year's convention was unveiled: the 2020 event will be held at Dallas, Texas, celebrating 25 years of Integrity Toys.

Special guest Jason Wu joined the hosts on stage to unveil the convention doll, the Elyse Jolie doll which he designed himself.

Note: All dolls pictured in these photos are prototypes; final colors and textures may vary slightly.

The original Vanessa sculpt makes an appearance as a centerpiece, wearing the same dress as Le Flor Natalia, in another colour. Dear IT designers, it kind of defeats the purpose of having the one of a kind doll’s wearing the same clothes as other dolls, no? The doll is beautiful, even though the orange tones in her make up are a bit off putting. She’s like a mix of Night Warrior and In Bloom Vanessas.

I’m not in awe of this year’s convention doll. I can pick at least ten Jason Wu gowns that look better than this in miniature size. The original effect of appliqué flowers does not translate well in this scale. Her make up is impressive but limits her redress options. The hairstyle is simply boring. You can see the original outfit from the Spring 2017 Jason Wu Collection runway further below.
