Integrity Toys Summer 2019 reveal: Poppy Parker Mission Brazil Capsule Collection

One of the most anticipated Integrity Toys collections each year is of course the Poppy Parker one. This year is no exception, even more so as it is the 10th anniversary since her debut. IT had announced early in the year, when the upgrade W Club membership dolls were unveiled, that the theme would be a continuation of the spy one, originally done back in 2014, The Girl From I.N.T.E.G.R.I.T.Y.. Now the action has moved to South America and the collection is called Mission Brazil, designed by none other than the incredible David Buttry.

public.jpeg

Imagine the surprise of the W Club members when they received the first email revealing the collection, to find out that it would not only be a capsule one, composed of only five dolls, three Poppies and a Tina Tanaka, plus Bellamy renamed Sergio, but that this was it for Poppy in 2019, the convention collection and the W Club exclusive doll notwithstanding. There was an exclusive video presentation of the collection and in it, Carol Roth and David mentioned that all this is due to production issues with their China factory that have turned their planning on its head. Roth mentioned that the problems will be eventually sorted out. But unless you’re going to the convention, this is it for this year regarding Poppy. Quite a disappointment for a ten year anniversary. Last year was again a capsule collection for Poppy (unveiled in late June), but it had slightly more dolls, all Poppies. And the price has gone up by $10.00 since last year. Ouch.

Another thing I wanted to mention here that is very particular to this collection, is the presence of guns. I was not comfortable with them even back in 2014, but now they are even more disturbing. With all that is going on in the US and gun violence in general, it looks very out of place to be putting guns in the hands of lovely made dolls, even if you colour them in candy colours and justify their presence with the theme. Now that I got this out of my chest, let’s check out the dolls.

These two-doll gift-sets are becoming the norm for Poppy lately and it is good, since you get two dolls for a much lower price than an individual doll. I think Integrity should have us pick the dolls we want from each collection and have them packaged in giftsets of two so that we get them cheaper. I love everything about this and will definitely join the lottery in the end of October.

Ayumi 1.0 is a favourite of mine and she looks gorgeous here, her hair, makeup and outfit. Poppy looks like To The Fair and Looks A Plenty blonde had a child. I’m probably going to exchange their bodies between them and let Tina have the high heeled body. I love the prints and the bags, David has done an incredible job with their design. One more thing: having dolls of colour sold in sets with Poppy to move merchandise is not a good image. They did it with Darla last year, now with Tina.

Bellamy is a handsome sculpt and I say yes to every opportunity to use it. This is a great version, he almost looks like Tom Ellis, the actor playing Lucifer in the namesake series. I love his style, a Latino Bond ready for action on the Copacabana. The saxophone is a great touch. David said the print on his swimsuit is Brazilian. Some people had issues with the different shade of brown his hair and facial hair have, but hey, most people do have that difference, it’s natural. I am happy that I have him on preorder.

Her swimsuit is directly referencing the catsuit worn by Agent Lotta Danger Poppy. She’s a beautiful Poppy, with a dreamy face and a lovely, colourful outfit. If I had the budget, I’d probably order this one too. Her hat is a bit weirdly shaped but it’s probably to accommodate her hair bump.

She’s probably the best doll of this collection and a gorgeous Poppy to boot. I love the Afro and her style is just like she popped out of a 1960s Vogue. I can just imagine her in one of the modernist Oscar Niemeyer Brazilian residences, attending a reception during filming. Preordered faster than the speed of light. It’s a good thing her edition is high.

Barbie enters the Star Wars universe!

It was expected for quite some time, there were even preorders from dealers available, but we had not seen any photos of the Barbie Star Wars dolls. But now they have arrived, with the doll’s already available to preorder at the official Barbie website and Amazon. They were inspired by original concept art from Star Wars: A New Hope. Robert Best, the designer of the three doll Star Wars™ X Barbie® Collection puts a high-fashion twist on the iconic characters. The official Barbie blog had an exclusive interview with Robert Best about his love for Star Wars, design challenges, and his experience in bringing this new collection to life.

public.jpeg

What was particularly exciting or unique about this collaboration for you?

The unique aspects of this come from the collaboration of two unique icons that truly stand alone. Barbie and Star Wars are cultural phenomena like no others and so it’s exciting to bring these two worlds together. I also think it might be an unexpected collaboration and I love that.

The character of R2-D2 is instantly recognizable. What are some of the more subtle ways you integrated elements of the droid's design into the doll’s fashion?

Barbie doll’s hair and make-up firstly are a fun, subtle nod to the signature shapes and colors that fans of R2-D2 will recognize. Her belt is a very specific R2-D2 element that immediately stands out. The silver lining of the puffer vest is also a nice detail.

With the Leia-inspired doll, how did you approach the task of designing a look that’s fresh, yet honors the original, since the movie costume and hairstyle are so indelibly iconic?

With the look inspired by Princess Leia, I knew that keeping the signature elements would be important and the challenge was making them different enough where it didn’t feel like a costume or a strict recreation. I also wanted to make sure Leia's confidence shined through. I took the hairstyle (that might be one of the most recognizable of all time) and added braids and volume as well as lowering the placement. For the gown I really wanted to amp up the glamour but still keep it relatively clean & simple. We created a stunning white gown with dramatic cape-like sleeves, highlighted with the silver corset belt, necklace and cuffs adding a cool touch of shine and texture.

Darth Vader’s movie costume is actually a suit of life-supporting armor and cybernetics. How did that fact change, enhance, and/or limit your approach to the doll’s couture design?

While these details are interesting and relevant to the characters in the narrative related to the films, when you're creating a look “inspired by,” the purpose is to capture the essence of the character and include notable details. Then, it becomes more about what the costume and its narrative purpose represents emotionally, and finding a way to convey that through fashion.

What do you think fans of Star Wars and Barbie will be most excited about?

As a fan of both myself, my hope is that fans will share the excitement and joy that I had when creating these dolls from this unique and amazing collaboration. For me personally, this was definitely a dream collaboration and I hope that comes through to the fans.

Below you can see each doll with the details from the Barbie website plus the official description. The $100.00 price for each is a bit steep, but not unusual for collector dolls with this kind of packaging - the boxes look amazing. For this price level though, they should have had articulation (just imagine the posing!) and some of the accessories could ave been made in better material. They will be available on the 18th of November. More comments on each doll below.

She’s the hip, young one of the trio, fittingly for the character she is inspired from. The use of the elements of R2D2’s construction is imaginative and creative, even with her make up and hair. The bag is a hint for the other droid, C3PO; smart, but I would have loved to see a doll inspired by that one. Maybe later on - imagine another trio with dolls inspired by C3PO, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. I also love the box design. It immediately brings the film sets to mind and can be displayed open or closed.

They have to have a female Vader in the new films ASAP! This is incredible: the styling and fashion are gorgeous and fit the character inspiration perfectly. My only peeve is with her sunglasses: they should have resembled the iconic Vader face mask a bit more. The helmet hair help a lot though. Superb. Anna Wintour has found a match!

What a beautiful tribute to Carrie Fisher and Leia Organa. I love how it references the original costume and styling from the first film, while transforming it into a high fashion look. If only the boots were not moulded plastic.

Marvel and Mattel unveil amazing X-Men ladies in SDCC: Storm, Dark Phoenix and Mystique

It is not uncommon for Marvel and other big companies to unveil new superhero dolls in SDCC - in fact it’s a given, even when they are not comic-con exclusives. So yesterday, during the event’s preview day, the three X-Men ladies everyone had been waiting for were unveiled. They celebrate Marvel’s 80-year anniversary.

From Mattel designer Bill Greening’s instagram - the SDCC stand of the Marvel Barbies

From Mattel designer Bill Greening’s instagram - the SDCC stand of the Marvel Barbies

The three dolls use the same body as the Wonder Woman collector doll and will be available from today to pre-order exclusively from Gamestop.com and Barbie Signature. The release date is October and they will then be available in shops as well. Retail price $54.99. We know dealers have been able to pre-order them so contact your favourite dealer for details.

storm-barbie-marvel-mattel-115-1563414599478.jpg

STORM: Born Ororo Munroe, Storm is one of the most powerful mutants on Earth. As a member of the X-Men team, she confounds enemies with her ability to manipulate weather and the atmosphere. Storm Barbie® doll is as electrifying as the character she emulates. This collectible Barbie® doll captures Storm’s iconic look in a shiny-black bodysuit, cape and thigh-high boots, all with metallic-gold trim. Gauntlets, a headdress and her signature gemstone brooch finish the fierce look.

storm-mattel-marvel-19-512-1563414599481.jpg

The dolls are designed with their original comic book looks, no relation to their movie counterparts. I love how Storm looks here, although the lack of heels on her boots is weird for these feet. I know Storm hovers over the ground instead of walking on it when she’s on super hero mode but this does not work perfectly for a doll. Other than that, she’s perfection. It looks like she is using the Selma sculpt.

mystique-mattel-barbie-marvel-19-280-1563414599446.jpg

MYSTIQUE: This Super Villain is a mutant born with the ability to shapeshift. She deceives her enemies by mimicking the appearance and voice of any person. Mystique Barbie® doll is as beguiling as the character she emulates. This collectible Barbie® doll captures the Super Villain’s iconic look in a white dress with a double slit and belt of skulls. Details include white gloves, boots, and the signature skull detail adorning her forehead.

Mystique-mattel-barbie-marvel-19-427-1563414935105.jpg

Great Mystique doll - I hope the hair will be perfect like this IRL. Love the scull accessories. She has the Louboutin sculpt.

dark-phoenix-mattel-barbie-marvel-19-248-1563414599466.jpg

DARK PHOENIX: Also known as Jean Grey-Summers, Dark Phoenix is an Omega-level mutant with telepathic and telekinetic powers. This beloved character, who has faced numerous deaths and rebirths, wrestles with her personal demons. Dark Phoenix Barbie® doll is as fierce as the character she emulates. This collectible Barbie® doll captures Dark Phoenix’s iconic look in a red bodysuit with shimmering gold details, including the gold phoenix graphic, thigh-high boots, gloves and a sash.

dark-phoenix-marvel-mattel-barbie-19-376-1563414935114.jpg

Beautiful Jean grey in her Dark Phoenix era, using the Mermaid sculpt. Again no heel boots, probably because she was not walking but flying all the time.

IFDC 2019 - Fabulous 40’s Felines doll’s unveiled!

The 2019 IFDC convention was held again in Las Vegas, organised by the amazing Jim Faraone. The theme this year was "Fabulous 40's Felines" and the event took place in the Orleans Hotel. Integrity Toys provided the convention dolls again, plus they offered an extra doll in the salesroom. This year, IT designer Vaughn Sawyers created a trio of 1940's inspired dolls just for the event, which were unveiled during dinner on Saturday. It has been a while since Vaughn did a retro inspired collection. If I’m not mistaken, his last one was the Fashion Royalty Classic collection back in 2013. And this year’s dolls have lots of similar elements to their 2013 sisters. All dolls, including the extra one, will be available through lottery to W Club members.

IMG_9869.PNG

But let’s get the proverbial cat out of the bag first. When the salesroom opened on Friday, people discovered that there was an extra Integrity Toys doll on sale: a make-up and violet hair colour variation of "Beyond This Planet" Violaine Perrin, part of the NU. FACE Counter Culture collection designed by Jessy Ayala.

When you attend a convention with a theme, you usually expect all dolls officially on sale there to be inspired by it, even with a wide margin, when they are extra. So it was quite jarring to see the very opposite of a 40s glamour gal on sale by IT Direct. Even more so seeing a colour variation of a doll from last year’s NuFace collection, one that had cause quite a fuss with the problematic rooting of her hair. Were there extra Violaine dolls made and the company found a way to sell them? The sheer size of the edition is quite big for a convention-offered doll (800), quite close to the original one (850). People that shied away from the previous version due to her dark lips are surely going to try for this one (I suspect a lot of dolls will be available to the club lottery), even though the fantasy coloured hair might still be an issue. If the outfit was in different colours too, the doll would make a bit more sense, the irrelevance to the convention theme notwithstanding. Now she just smacks of opportunism - and don’t throw stories about fun variations at my face. Companies that sell product want to profit and take advantage of every opportunity to minimise loss, which is perfectly fine. Sugarcoating it makes it feel insincere though. And to make matters worse, look how much more interesting Jessy made her, by putting her in another outfit by Kyle (inthevalleyofthedolls)

The three dolls by Vaughn are all beautiful and a perfect fit to the convention theme. They remind me a lot of his Classic FR collection, as I mentioned earlier, and this is a very good thing, as that one was gorgeous too. Using Monogram sculpts with East 59 body (the line everyone thought would be presented here) is a brilliant idea. The doll has a sultry, sexy style and the suit is right out of a 40’s Hollywood film. The shape, cut and execution of the suit are breathtaking. If I could afford it, I’d enter the lottery for this one too, but the high prices (and getting even higher, as you’ll see below) prevent me from doing so. The bag and shoes are very similar to the 2013 Splendid Jordan and share their colour.

    IMG_9880.JPG
    IMG_9881.JPG

Considering the convention theme, one of the dolls at least would certainly have been a lingerie one, and the centerpiece fills this part brilliantly. Dish is delicious (pun intended) and the combination of the transparent robe with the lace undies, red hair in a classic 40’s style and lush lips makes her irresistible. They should have included a miniature retro telephone with her. The +$10 price from the previous one is probably due to the more limited edition, but the difference is only 100 dolls. It’s a lingerie doll, she would be the cheaper one, she even has less accessories than the rest.

This is the best doll of the convention. Elaborate gown, incredible hair and face, magnificent jewellery and shoes. I’m not crazy about the fur, it does not look great in the photos, but she can live without that. I love the nails too. She looks a lot like a very good and dear friend of mine, so I’m entering to get her. Va va She also gives me vibes of Carmen Dell’ Orefice, the famous fashion model. Well done Vaughn, fantastic trio of beauties.

The final RuPaul doll of the new series, Red Realness, is now available from Integrity Toys

Integrity Toys, in collaboration with RuPaul Charles himself, just released the third and final doll in the recent series, Red Realness. in this incarnation, RuPaul is serving you her classic two "mint" lunch - the lunch with the contestants near the end of each season where they are served tic tacs for lunch. This doll is more limited than the first one in the series, so make sure that you get one before Red Realness sashays away.

While the first series of Ru Paul dolls were quite varied in style and looks, this one is just Ru Paul triplets that only change colours between them. All three have similar hairstyles and make up, sequined long gowns that look alike and similar jewellery. The only major difference each time is the accessories, with the best having been the opera glasses of the first one. So it is a no thanks from me. Plus, I have a problem with the tic tac concept of the Ru Paul lunches, that kind of promotes an unhealthy diet metaphorically. I’m sorry to see the line end so quickly but not sorry if it has to be one lookalike doll after another.
