Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 1: the 25th Anniversary gala

The first convention day ended with a “gala” presentation. Alain and Carol presented the centerpiece doll early on - a gorgeous Nadja - and then they had a special guest: Rene, the first IT designer, who created most of the first Integrity playline dolls, had a nice talk with Alain, recalling the early days, the inspiration and spirit of diversity and her love (as well as the whole company’s love) for what they are doing. It was a nice trip down memory lane, with lots of photos from old catalogues and products, seeing Janay and ALysa and the other dolls from the first steps of Integrity. Toys.

Another remake of a legendary doll, a holy grail for many. Glow Vanessa was the highlight of the Miami FR collection from 2006, the only premium doll from the line (the others were all basic dolls wearing swimsuits). She of course had as an inspiration Donatella Versace and her Barbie Signature version, released in 2004 from Mattel. I have both Vanessa and the Versace Barbie and Kesenia, while beautiful, does look a bit lesser next to them. She’s going to be very popular though. She might be closer to the looks of the OOAK prototype Natalia that was given as a contest prize, from the same 2006 collection.

Another fantastic doll by David Buttry. This Sooki is of course based on Spooky Sooki and Sooki: The Return from 2008 and 2013 respectively. The look and particularly the styling of the doll remind me a lot of Pauley Perrette’s character Abby in the NCIS series. The skirt is something between Atelier Versace winter 1990 and anything Comme Des Garcons, with a little Yohji Yamamoto and Margiela thrown in for good measure. But of course the pièce de résistance is the bat shaped backpack. Genius!

Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 1: The Convention Collection

Lots of things to take in on day one of the Integrity Toys Legendary 25th Anniversary convention, so I’m writing a number of posts to give you all the information about them! There was a separate presentation for the convention collection - which was available to preorder complete for the convention ticket holders - and also the IT Direct Exclusive dolls that will also be available in the convention shop for the main package holders. These presentations have the feel of the webinars that W Club organizes for collection reveals, but, as they are pre-recorded, feel a bit awkward. If they were live, and the people making the presentation were interacting with the attendees, instead of pretending to (yes, it shows), the experience would have been that much better. We are seeing gorgeous clothes though and that is awesome. On with it then.

Quite a beautiful Poppy, but she does not even come close to the original inspiration, Reluctant Debutante. Alain correctly pointed out that she’s more late sixties while the original was firmly in the very early part of the decade. I love the embroidery of the dress, the design and colouring is superb.. Well done David. The dress is a recreation of the one worn by Mia Farrow in the film A Dandy In Aspic, where she was also wearing this outfit that brings to mind the fur details of Poppy’s coat.

It’s been a while since we had a new character added to the Fashion Royalty line up - and it is nice doing it in a convention so that she gets lots of attention. The appearance of a new Latina character was teased one year ago at the Baltimore convention and we’re seeing her now. She does not have a story announced yet. Jessy said they’re keeping it a mystery for now. The inspiration for her outfit and styling is Style Renaissance Adele Makeda, from the 2006 Pompadour collection. That was the year I started collecting Fashion Royalty and for me it has two of the best collections for FR: Pompadour and Miami. I am glad that year is getting referenced in this year’s anniversary looks.

Another grail in the making! Look at that face! That attitude! That style! An amazing Agnes, courtesy of Jessy, who was inspired by Intimately Acquainted Luchia and Soir De Paris fashion set MFD exclusive from 2003. The doll reminds me of Queen of Everything and High Gloss Agnes dolls combined. Love her and am so sorry to not be getting her. During the presentation I heard Alain pronounce her surname as wees instead of the proper vice (after all it’s German for white). Is that a thing now or was it a slip of the tongue?

Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 1: Welcome doll and W Club Upgrade dolls

It’s that time of the year again - Integrity Toys convention has begun! And this year it is the 25th anniversary of the company, so the convention is special. Also it is the first ever virtual one because of the pandemic. This of course has given the chance to more people to participate in it, even if they do not have the actual main convention ticket. Anyone who has the W Club event or the Upgrade package can attend all events (save the afterparty on the last day) . I’m happy to say that I am one of the people attending, even though I do not have the main convention ticket, so this year I have an inside view of everything unfolding, to the extend that time difference allows.

The platform of the online event opened for everyone at 10.00 EST - which was 17.00 for me, so quite convenient. The interface was similar to most platforms for online exhibitions and events currently available on the market (I know because it’s the sector I work in) so it felt familiar and easy to navigate right off the bat. I hope it is like this for everyone! The first event we could all attend was a welcome chat with the Percy family, which was an easy way of saying hello to everyone and ask lots of questions about everything convention related. After about an hour (and overcoming some technical glitches that caused a small delay), we were able to watch the first presentation in the convention auditorium: Alain and Carol welcomed us via video (pre-filmed): they talked about the event and the various technical stuff and how people could make their shopping afterwards. Then we were able to see the upgrade dolls unveiled, so let’s start with the amazing duo of Veronique Perrin and Adele Makeda, who were the original Fashion Royalty debut dolls back in the day,

After the presentation of the two upgrade dolls, we saw another pre-recorded segment of Alain interviewing Percy Newsome, the Integrity Toys founder and CEO. He talked about the creation of the company and how it operates, while sharing funny memories with Alain. Then it was time to present,,, a gift, so they showed us a doll-sized IT T-shirt, like the ones you could buy for yourself from their shop. But then, they said that we need a doll to wear it and out came the welcome doll, which is Janay!

It's the 20th anniversary of Jason Wu with Integrity Toys - and there are twin Poppies to start celebrating!

Most, if not all of us, will remember 2020 as the year of COVID. Happily though, there are also events and anniversaries to observe and celebrate, making it easier to go through it all. So, apart from this being the 25th anniversary of the company, this autumn marks another great milestone for Integrity Toys: Its long time partner and collaborator, designer Jason Wu, is celebrating his 20th anniversary with them. An obvious hommage to Bergdorf Goodman Poppy Parker (which technically was not a Poppy Parker doll, at least not named), this pair is quite a nice change from the barrage of Elyse anniversary dolls Jason did last time he was celebrating a milestone.. Jason loves polka dots so it is not wonder they appeared here, transforming the look of the original dress into something more pop and with a slight retro feel. The coat is almost manly, like she borrowed it from her boyfriend to fend off a sudden chill. The accessories are, as is the norm with Jason Wu releases, quite minimal, but they match this look well. The shopping bags are a nice addition, also like the one that the Bergdorf doll had. It would have been more interesting if the dresses were contrasting - one white, one black, but the production costs would be much higher. I am going for the blonde as she is more like BG Poppy as blonde and can only afford one of the pair, if I win. Fingers crossed!
