Six young fashion designers dress Barbie for her 60th anniversary- British Vogue in collaboration with Mattel

Celebrating  Barbie’s 60th anniversary, British Vogue invited six leading young designers to dress the icon in their signature style. Here are the photographs of the designers and their models, read the full story here.

Matty Bovan

A wealth of artisanal techniques have been incorporated into the costume for his intricately constructed Barbie: hand-padded and sewn into her dress with golden Japanese yarn, she is the miniature embodiment of his magpie eclecticism. “It’s kind of like Barbie couture,” Bovan reflects. “I wanted her to have the same energy that my runway clothes have... She’s epic.”

public.jpeg

Mowalola

Her Barbie is dressed in a miniature evolution of Mowalola’s spring/summer 2020 collection, with backcombed hair by Virginie P Moreira and make-up created by Daniel Sallstrom (using a miniature paintbrush), “she is a Mowalola superhero,” Ogunlesi grins. “She’s strong and captivating and ready to have a really good time. I want to be wherever she’s going.”

Richard Malone

“Barbie is a businesswoman – and a lot of the women I work with are too, but they don’t dress like men in suits; fashion is a part of their identity. I wanted to show that Barbie could wear a runway look but still live her everyday life and remain the boss that she truly is.”

public.jpeg

Art School

Eden Loweth & Tom Barratt’s “non-binary Barbie” offers a perfect example of their take on figure-skimming glamour. “Art School is about making clothes that are really tolerant, that will stand with someone throughout their life, and as they evolve as in their own identity.”

public.jpeg

Charles Jeffrey Loverboy

His Barbie (“Let’s call her ‘Wee Hen’,” he decrees in a Glaswegian drawl) exemplifies that spirit: dressed in a replica of the closing look from his spring/summer 2018 collection, which drew upon the history of cross-dressing through the ages, she is, in his words, “wearing the most fabulous piece ever.” “It took a whole week – but just looks like the actual dress!” he exclaims. “I’m really proud of her.”

public.jpeg

Supriya Lele

Growing up besotted by Barbie (“I was an only child, so I had about 40”), Lele’s first venture into design was creating custom wardrobes for her – now things have come full circle, as she precisely scaled the measurements of one of her autumn/winter 2019 looks to suit Barbie’s size. In fact, so perfectly is her neon outfit reconfigured that even the pockets are fully operational. “I felt like a child again,” she grins. “But now I have an incredible pattern-cutter to help.”

W Club reveals the first 2017 club doll: British Invasion is happening! Poppy Parker and her egg chair!

Programming is not always smooth. Especially when you depend on third parties to deliver products or services required for it. So it was no surprise that W Club announced to its members that the first special Club doll that was slotted to be revealed around this time of the year was postponed and another one took its place. They also said that Fashion Royalty and Nu Face collections would be delayed too. The consolation prize is great though: the first W Club doll of the year is an amazing Poppy Parker from the Swinging London collection! More so, members get to order an egg chair for her too!

Poppy Parker is ready for her British Invasion in a Union Jack mini-dress. She sports cherry red, fully rooted hair, a mod faux leather scooter (or racing) coat, bobby hat and bright white knee-high laced boots, Poppy also comes with a matching jewelry set, a purse and three British themed pillows. For adult collectors ages 15 and up only. This doll cannot stand alone; a doll stand is included. Note: The doll and the chair are sold separately, with the 3 throw pillows coming with the doll.. Please note that the doll pictured in the photo is a prototype and as always, final production colors and textures may vary slightly.

IMG_0496.PNG

This is an amazing release, especially for mod lovers. The doll is absolutely amazing with her cherry red hair, mod make up and styling. The Union Jack dress is a bit too on the nose but it's definitely going to be very popular. The mod coat, hat, boots and bag perfectly finish the look. Her jewelry looks perfect too.  The coat reminds me of the one worn by Sweet Confection Poppy.

IMG_0497.PNG

The perfection continues to the box she comes in: it is made to resemble an iconic British red phone booth! We already knew this would be coming but seeing how good it looks... amazing!

IMG_0499.PNG

The chair is a reproduction in scale of the iconic Ball Chair, designed back in 1963 by the brilliant Finish designer Eero Arnio. It must not be confused with the egg chair, which is egg shapd and designed by Arne Jacobsen, a famous Danish architect and designer of that era. Below is a photo of the original chair by the photographer Sailko (Wikimedia Commons).

Approx. Dimensions: 9" High X 8" Wide X 7.5" Deep

W Club members get to preorder one doll per membership plus all the chairs they want, by June 20th. What an amazing release! I bet she is going to have a large edition number. The price of the chair is good too, so I'd love to see more reproductions of iconic chairs released with Integrity Toys dolls. We already have the Barcelona (FR) and the Panton (Dynamite Girls) chairs, so please IT, give us more!

Poppy Parker goes to Swinging London!

Poppy Parker fans and particularly W Club members, already knew that this season Poppy Parker would be traveling to jolly ol' England for a fashion trip like no other. On Friday 12th of May, Integrity Toys unveiled the Swinging London Collection to club members via email. This year, the Poppy Parker collection is split into two waves, so this is only the first wave, with a second one to follow later in the year. While most of the dolls will all be available through the network of Authorized Integrity Toys Dealers, this year, instead of a "lottery" doll, there is an event doll available for all W Club members to preorder . Remember that all, dolls except the last one (Misty Hollow) are available to preorder from Integrity Toys dealers. See a list here:

http://www.integritytoys.com/authorized-dealers/

On Saturday, May 13th, the Poppy Parker designer, talented David Buttry, was available for online chat with W Club members. Things we found out about the line? Darla is on a little break. The 2nd wave, which will be part of the same collection, might feature Poppy's friends, but no male dolls. They use the big eye screening first seen on Coney Island Saturday Poppy. There will be another one doll gift set in the next wave. There will be no high heeled doll in this collection because the fashions of the period use either kitten heels or flats. No cream skin tone this year for Poppy, although he is considering it for the future. There are two waves to spread the release and help with the collectors' budgets. And the doll box, designed by Alain Trempley, will be with a front window and styled like the famous London red telephone booth. It was also announced that Poppy Parker will be the doll of the 2018 Italian Doll Convention! Now let's see the dolls and what I think about them!

Here you get not one, but two Poppy Parker dolls in the same collector friendly package, showing Poppy upon her arrival to London from Paris and then post her sleek Mod makeover. For adult collectors ages 15 and up only. This doll cannot stand alone; a doll stand is included.

IMG_0273.JPG

The brunette has a new screening designed by Jessy Ayala. And she channels young Jackie Kennedy a bit. Love everything about her: her polka dot suit, her frilly shirt, hand bag and shopping bag, plus the ring!

IMG_0275.JPG

Look at this gal. Gorgeous all over. She does channel Out Of This World Poppy from 2015, but that one had long hair and Japan skin. I love the dress and the earrings, we have seen the bangles before and the clutch is good. Two dolls for $180? Yes please.  No wonder the set is probably sold out by now.

This gift set features a youthful rendition of Poppy Parker, which features fully rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes. Poppy comes with three colorful mini-dresses, three pairs of shoes and all sorts of little mix-and-match fashion accessories to create many looks. It comes in a brand new Mod-themed collector package (different than the telephone booth one I presume). The necktie featured on the blue dress is removable. For adult collectors ages 15 and up only. This doll cannot stand alone; a doll stand is included.

IMG_0284.JPG

Love this gift set too, although for this price, I'd expect at least one or two bags. Good thing is one can use bags and accessories from older mod collections, as the set is quite versatile. No wonder the set is very popular with collectors.

Check the photo below, from Carnaby Street, London, late 60s. David Buttry posted it on his Fb profile. You can see many elements from it in the three outfits of this gift set.

Dressed in super vibrant colors, Poppy comes in a groovy rendition of the traditional rain coat. Comes complete with clear vinyl boots and a fully functional clear vinyl miniature umbrella. For adult collectors ages 15 and up only. This doll cannot stand alone; a doll stand is included.

IMG_0294.JPG

Second dark skinned Poppy means collectors going nuts about her. This was probably the first Poppy of this collection to sell out in dealers. I like everything about her except her hairstyle. She would have looked so much better with a short bob, with or without fringe. She would look so much better with a small cap and a bag. I hope to get her umbrella and clear boots at some point.

Poppy is an articulated doll with fully rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes. Clad in her modern pastel tweed suit, Poppy is also wearing a matching hat, pink bag and matching gloved hands. She also comes with a small camera. For adult collectors ages 15 and up only. This doll cannot stand alone; a doll stand is included.

IMG_0300.JPG

I like the outfit but not the doll. It's either the hairstyle or the fact that she reminds me of Hippy Dippy Poppy. The camera is to die for but I'd never buy a doll just for that.

Barbie gets her own dedicated space at Selfridges and lots of London pizzazz

Later this week, within the new Selfridges Toy Shop opening up on its fourth floor, Barbie gets her own dedicated space. And what better occasion to ask some up-and-coming London designers to dress her up for than this? Three of the British capital's (and one of fashion's top cities) emerging talents are making the bill: Fred Butler, Nazir Mazhar and Sister By Sibling.

It is not the first time that the iconic doll is dressed by a real fashion designer but I think it's a first in promoting up and coming names instead of well established brands. It's London Babe! The dolls are 15 in total, five per designer, and will be available in Selfridges alongside other collectible Barbies.

Each designer concentrated on their strengths: Sibling’s Cozette McCreery, Sid Bryan, and Joe Bates designed quirky knit looks (below), Fred Butler did a series of  sculptural ensembles (first photo), while Nazir Mazhar went for hard-edged street-wear styles (above). Check out poor Ken in a bucket hat and sweat suit.

Sister By Sibling had made a nod to Barbie 18 months ago on London Fashion week in February 2012 by having five looks presented on Barbie dolls. And of course this is not the only current designer Barbies around this time of the year, there's the Coach thing going on as well but that will be in another post. Enjoy the London chic:

Poppy Parker: The Happening

As mentioned in my April post about the main Poppy Parker collection this year, the mood is Swinging Sixties in London. I managed to get three dolls of that collection and the first one has arrived: Poppy Parker The Happening!

She's even better than her promo photos! She is wearing a mini dress covered in silver sequins, with a round neckline (that reminds me of ancient Egypt), ending at the back in straps (look further down for photos of it), metallic fishnet stockings, and her accessories include one of the best pairs of earrings I have seen on a doll (silver concentric circles hanging with beads under a "diamond" stud), four silver bangles (that were tarnished almost instantly), a silver clutch (which is her only so-so accessory, looks and feels cheap) and a pair of silver sling-back bow shoes.

Her hair is pulled up and back in a very long ponytail, with the top puffed up in a very mid-sixties style. The hair is treated with product to make it stay put and wavy. I know some people had problems with greasy or over-treated hair but mine looks perfect. Her make up is very mod: light blue eye-shadow, black eye-liner, applied lashes and almost nude shiny lips. Her eyes are purple but do not look unnatural.

There is nothing not to love about this doll, except that awful clutch and the tarnished bangles. Almost perfect. Now I'm even more giddy anticipating the next one coming.

And how small this world really is. As I was preparing this post, a very special lady I am following on twitter, Penny Calder, posted a photograph from the special 50th anniversary issue of British Vogue, from mid October 1965. I found the whole spread, with model Donna Mitchell photographed by David Montgomery,  from that issue in this gorgeous website and I think this is pretty much the inspiration for Poppy's outfit.

So below is a series of Poppy's photos specially treated for your pleasure. Hope you like her as much as I do.
