Integrity Toys Obsession Convention 2021 Day 1: The Welcome doll is Vanessa!

Just like last year, the Integrity Toys convention was held virtually, on the web, due to the ongoing pandemic. Unlike last year, W Club event ticket holders (like me) could not attend the rest of the convention events. So it was less fun than 2020, but it probably helped make the whole experience more smooth and glitch free for everyone.

This year's theme was Obsessed, which, per IT, “explores what truly defines our obsession for fashion, couture, makeup, and everything that is connected to the world of beauty, seen through the eyes and styling of the Integrity Toys design team!” This was a free pass for IT designers to create whatever dolls they wanted, but the result was a lack of cohesion and a mixed bag of offerings. While it helped the designers make some unusual and bold choices, it resulted in some dolls having a less than warm welcome from collectors, attendees or not, even when designed by IT’s enfant gâté Jessy Ayala.

Integrity Toys 2021 Obsession convention header

Another sore point is the availability of the dolls presented to attendees. Integrity Toys stated that they did not have the dolls available for shipping until “likely sometime in January / February.” Having in mind that people were receiving 2020 convention dolls even in November, it looks like delays are becoming a permanent part of the experience. I wonder how would this go across in a live event - can you imagine not having the dolls to hand over to attendees in a live convention? And since these troubles are not going away soon, I am betting that next year’s convention will be held virtually too, regardless of the situation with the pandemic. The uncertainty over shipping schedules affects everything worldwide and will not be restored very soon.

A Doll's Life Vanessa Perrin doll as the welcome doll from Integrity Toys convention - blonde vinyl doll in a gold dress with ruffles

On with the dolls - and first up is the Welcome Gift Set. Main convention ticket holders had already received a package swag that was sent as a surprise, with a set of replacement hands and a doll sized make up kit, plus the convention lanyard and badge. The welcome gift set was designed by Mark Tinkey - here’s what he had to say about it:

Vanessa Perrin welcome doll from Integrity Toys Obsession convention

"I wanted to think of NU. Fantasy in a different way for this gift set, the fantasy life of a doll made real. I was inspired by the dolls I grew up wishing I could own as a kid and YouTube videos of people obsessed with being living dolls. You'll notice oversized jewelry and details that feel doll-like, but still incredibly chic. My own love of doll gift sets and what I would want as a collector also heavily influenced this set. I wanted this to be a fantasy of mix and match play with a gorgeous doll as its main feature. I hope you have as much fun playing with this set as I had designing it for you!" -

I was not expecting Mark Tinkey to design the welcome doll but he did a good job. First problem is that she looks too much like a watered down version of Smoke & Shadows Vanessa that he designed as well. Second problem (always for me): she is almost a Barbie clone. The styling, the choice of clothing and accessories, is too much like the Barbiestyle dolls. And I do not get why she is under the Nu Fantasy line. This line is almost always about known mythical or fairy tale characters reinterpreted in a modern fashion. Maybe it is Vanessa’s fantasy of living like Barbie, LOL. Having in mind his brilliant work at the two Coven Couture dolls and his previous creative work, this feels a bit underwhelming.

Vanessa Perrin doll in black top with ruffles and long chain earrings

The gold gown is a reinterpretation of a Valentino Haute Couture one from 2020. It is probably the fabric that makes a poor translation in doll scale. The black ruffle top could be from a number of designers (Saint Laurent, Vauthier, McQueen, Herrera, De La Renta, Valli, to name a few) but the closer one I could find was a Valentino from 2020 again. The fur coat is a classic - from YSL in the 70s till today and so many others. I love the versatility this giftset offers and the variety of styles and accessories - can’t wait to see how it is packaged.

The dolls is really pretty but not exceptional, especially following at the heels of Smoke and Shadow Vanessa. She reminds me a lot of how Nicole Kidman looked in Nine Perfect Strangers, which is not my cup of tea at all.

IFDC 2021 - two Poppy Parker glamour ladies for the final legendary event

The last ever IFDC was supposed to take place last year, then it got moved to this year due to the pandemic, but alas it was not meant to be again - the event did not take place live and the two dolls were revealed to attendees and W Club members at a later date. While attendees got their dolls plus the chance to order additional ones, club members could take part in a lottery for the right to buy them from the club allocated quantity. Both dolls are slight variations, mainly in colour and skin tone, from dolls we have seen before, but they are still gorgeous.

This is obviously a colour and skin tone variation of Masquerade Magic from IFDC 2020. Beautiful combination of her dark skin tone with the warm and vibrant orange of her suit. Not crazy about her lip colour though - a burnt orange or a warm darker red stain would have looked so much better. And a pair of more glammed up shows would be preferable - i.e. rhinestone covered pumps.

This one looks more original but definitely has her origin in Sizzling In Paris Poppy from the Model Traveler 2020 collection. I’d love to have the outfit to dress up Ginger in this and pose her next to my Paris Poppy. This is the one I’d buy if I had the funds.

The convention doll that no one knew existed - Legendary Status Agnes silver version

I bet that most, if not all, people that have been to conventions know pretty much every single doll, outfit and accessory officially available there, by the time the event comes to an end. Even dolls that have not arrived on time are announced with all the usual accompanying pomp and circumstance, no matter that they are not in the hands of attendees at reveal time. So it was with great surprise that W Club members saw an additional convention doll, a silver variant of the Legendary Status Agnes that was the face on the convention doll boxes and was available to all for pre-order. Colouring is not the only difference between the two dolls however: the new version is only available to attendees for pre-order now and, if any are left, the remainder will be given as a lottery to W Club members. Weird? Yes. I’ve read countless theories on why this doll appeared now but that is all that they are, and will remain - theories. Unless you are an Integrity Toys employee, you know nothing, like that Jon Snow guy. I will say this though: in the current climate within the IT doll collectors, this will not win any points for the company. Money though - that’s another thing.

This is how the doll commemorating the 25th anniversary of Integrity Toys should have looked from the beginning. This is the doll that should have been in the package, the one that should have been available to the club instead of that other one. She’s everything the other one is not. I did not pre-order the original one but this one? In a heartbeat. Wonder if I will ever be able to own her.

P.S. Special thanks to Joshua for the help with the post.

Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 3: The Jason Wu Gala and convention doll

And we finally reached the finale of the convention, which is the Saturday night gala, with Jason Wu as a special guest. Jason appeared on our screens and had a nice talk with Carol, reminiscing about how he started with doll design and Integrity Toys and it was so nice to see how he’s still passionate about the dolls, despite having a big real fashion house of his own now. One titbit we got from Jason was that Adele’s original sculpt was based on Erykah Badu, way before Fashion Royalty debuted. He also gave us information on a new doll but we have it under wraps for a few days more. The winners of the design competition were revealed: photography (Lester Javier), styling (Ramiro Rivas) and diorama (Lani Billitti). And, closing the convention in a fantastic way, here are the two gala dolls - the centerpiece and the convention doll, which, surprisingly, is not either Elyse or Agnes (btw, the Agnes you saw on my first post for the convention will be the 25th Anniversary Doll and will be released later this year).

Integrity Toys sent a notice about the doll’s dress colour:

Important note: We noticed that during the presentation this evening, Alain commented that Dania's dress was blue; however, we checked with the design team and it is really more of a deep royal *purple*. Depending on your monitor/device calibration, this color might read differently, but in person, it is a deep purple tone. We wanted to alert you to avoid any confusion vis-à-vis what was said on our "virtual stage".

Dania looks gorgeous here, in a Sofia Vergara kind of way. The original inspiration is Most Desired Eugenia, one of the FR holy grails. The new incarnation looks better to me and I’m sure this will be a new grail doll.

A new character debuts as the convention doll - and if she looks a bit familiar it is because the sculpt is the original Avantguard one, redone digitally in 1/6 scale. The name is probably referring to the known fashion model Aymeline Valade, but this look is totally Diana Ross. Unlike the debut of Karolyn Stone, this one was received enthusiastically. After the end of the presentation, main package ticket holders were invited on a zoom virtual after party, to celebrate the end of Integrity Toys first virtual convention. It was overall a great success, very different from a real one of course, but people still had a good time and got great dolls. If the presentations were live, like webinars are, and not pre-recorded, it would have been even better. Maybe next time.

Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 3: The W Club Event

With the convention this year being virtual, Integrity Toys decided to open up the W Club event to all members of the club. And that is the reason most of us managed to attend the convention, even though we did not have access to the convention collection, the style lab or any other event dolls apart from this one. Still though, it was really nice and a great experience, even online. The club event was great, all the Integrity Toys designers were in the pre-recorded presentation and talked about their history with the company and the lines they design for it. Some news from the talk: the LatinX character (not Isabella Alves)will be part of the Nu Face line. Mark Tinkley is going to revisit a popular brand that “lets people’s fantasies come to life” - could it be Nu Fantasy? Chris Stoeckel said there will be new characters added to the East 59th line up. Vaughn was really vague and did not give out anything but all designers, during the Q+A section agreed that costume and fantasy dolls are very possible. The centerpiece doll left everyone with their jaw on the floor when it was revealed in the beginning of the presentation, with Jessy commenting on it later on. This doll will be a preorder for the participants, as the number of attendees of this event is way bigger than the rest of the convention, so the doll will ship in Spring 2021. Add to that the delay of the arrival of the giveaway doll (it will ship late December - early January) and we will not see the actual dolls of this event for quite a while yet.

What an amazing doll! It’s not often that we get this much goth in Fashion Royalty and this one is done in a very elegant way, The original inspiration is Dark Narcissus Kyori Sato but the capable internet sleuths quickly discovered an Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2019 outfit that matches this one really well. Add the lace details from another Alexander McQueen outfit, this one from Fall/Winter 2018 collection and you get Eugenia’s outfit.

This is a beautiful; Ayumi! The original inspiration is Miracle Child Ayumi, which is the first one ever released (and had the original sculpt). The dress is a bit simpler than the original and she does not have the gorgeous red bag that was with that giftset. The hat reminds me a lot of this year’s upgrade Eugenia. Her hair colour is gorgeous and fits her so much. I’m happy for our W Club doll.
