Dolly Days 5 part 2: Poppy Parker travelling again!

The last two dolls to be presented on the final day of the Dolly Days Integrity Toys week-long event, were from David Buttry: the final additions to the Model Traveler collection. One of them is inspired from India and the other from Australia, in contrast to the previous dolls of the series that were referring to particular cities, not countries. But that is the least that bothers me with these two.

These last couple of additions to the Model Traveler collection look like a quick and uninspired money grab effort to me. Take Enlightened In India for example. She looks like a mash up of previous Poppy dolls: take a dash of Glad All Over, add a cup of Time Of The Season, mix in the Midas Touch sandals and there you have it! I’m not saying she is not beautiful, just not that original to me. And back then, Mumbai was still called Bombay.

This one is inspired by the famous Yves Saint-Laurent safari outfit modelled for posterity by Verushka. Unfortunately, Mattel did this one first, and with much more glorious results, as they had the license from YSL to make an exact copy of the outfit. The Integrity Toys version looks like the H&M watered down edition of the French original I’m afraid. Not even a hat to finish off properly. The doll wearing it is gorgeous, even though the violet eyes threw me off. Both dolls sold out at dealers really quickly, despite the large editions. Poppy will sell, no matter what it seems.

Dolly Days 5 part 1: East 59th gets a new character

The fifth and last Dolly Day by Integrity Toys was a bit of a surprise for those of us waiting for a mini Nu Face collection to appear, or a chance to buy replacement bodies, or both. Instead we saw a double unveiling of two mini collections. First up is East 59th Street, designed by Chris Stoeckel, with three dolls, one of which is a new character but not a new sculpt: there is the introduction of Victoire Roux' half-sister, Della Roux, using the same sculpt as Victoire but she’s black.

A glamourous version of Victoire, swathed in sequins, gleaming from head to toe like a million bucks, and in red and white like a fashion model version of Santa Claus.. She reminds me of Monogram Allure in her style. My only objection here is the hairstyle - we’ve seen her before wearing this one, albeit in another hair colour. We have seen the accessories before as well.

The festive spirit continues with this version of Constance, although I initially thought it was Evelyn, because of the red hair. Rich outfit and a very glamorous styling all over make her stand out. Not crazy about the skirt buttons.

Best doll of the three, Della makes quite an intriguing entry. I love how this sculpt looks in this iteration and can tell that she might upstage her Caucasian sister easily, especially if she comes dressed in couture outfits like this one. The main ensemble with the full skirt is a recreation of the Zemire 1954-1955 Dior couture one, which has been done before for dolls, notably Gene Marshall. This is also true for the second look, the strapless one, a recreation of the Camaieux dress rom Christian Dior Autumn/Winter 1949 Couture collection. I really want to get this one, but will delay it a while. Now can someone tell me how can two half sisters look like twins?

Dolly Days 3: A night at the opera!

The third day of Integrity Toys’ "Dolly-Days" brings us two more dolls in the series created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the partnership between Integrity Toys and former doll designer prodigy, now well known fashion designer, Jason Wu. He is paying homage to the two characters that started it all for him, "The Originals" Véronique Perrin® and Adèle Makéda®*. Based on an original concept Jason imagined just for these two iconic characters, they are going to a La Traviata opera performance at the famous La Fenice theatre in Venice. the two dolls are sold separately and are a W Club members only lottery opportunity. Deceprrivly simple at first sight, the dolls reveal their bias cut spiral lace dresses upon closer inspection, not an easy feat, unless the lace is sold like this and the dress is cut in the usual way. I love the embroidered masks, that look so very much like those from Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2009 collection. The lovely cape is a very classic choice for a big opera gala, especially in places like the mythical La Fenice in Venice, where a very young and almost unrecognisable Maria Callas performed for the first time La Traviata. Even the hairstyle is a classic one for Callas. As is the tradition for Jason Wu dolls lately, the accessories are more than minimal - two stud earrings and the shoes, plus the aforementioned mask. A clutch (better yet, a minaudière) should have been included. The $175 price is less than the $200 Wu dolls command at retail. In fact it is the same price asked for Korinne in the Maison Collection (Vero was $160 then). not cheap, but not that expensive either. The two payment instalments for the lottery winners surely help. I’m not entering the lottery for her because I really do not like the way her lips are painted outside their natural lip line. They look filled to the brim and that is no look for Veronique in my books.

Adele looks so much better than Veronique with this look - I love her face and the austere hairstyle, combined with the cape, brings to mind Naomi Campbell in Valentino Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2019 - although the outfit is quite different, the silhouette, fabric and styling are similar. The same comments about accessories and price can be said here as for Veronique. But she is definitely the best of them and I entered for her. Wish me luck.

Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 2: The Poppy Parker Gala

The evening of the second day of the Integrity Toys Legendary Convention brought the Poppy Parker Gala event, with an online presentation by Alain Trembley and Carol Roth, featuring David Buttry, the line’s celebrated designer, as a special guest. He told us a lot about his history with the company (he started with the W Club), as well as the history of the creation of Poppy Parker. Apart from already known details, like the models who inspired the doll’s face and style etc., he also shared unknown stuff. like the email correspondence between him and Jason about the doll’s name. He also gave us the moodboards for next year’s Poppy collection, which will be all about Palm Springs - that means late 60s - early 70s and a very lounge, laid back chic modern aesthetic. He mentioned that Ginger and maybe Chip will be part of next year’s collection but also that we will see Ginger sooner than 2021. Also, all 2021 Poppy Parker dolls, apart from the convention ones, will be part of the Palm Springs line.

There were many who had already guessed that one of the convention Poppy dolls would channel Center of Attention and indeed the centerpiece of the gala was Command of Attention. It was a bit weird finding out that the giveaway doll of this event was inspired from Lilac Frost Poppy, as that doll never had the aura of being a grail or legendary. She is a beauty nonetheless. The fabric used on the vest and shorts is the exact same used on Lilac Frost’s suit. Her face is gorgeous and so is her blouse in this fabric. The monochromatic look may through some people off but it works great here.
