East 59th capsule collection unveiled!

Two new capsule collections were revealed this week from Integrity Toys. The first one is East 59th Street by Chris Stoeckel, who continues with his foray in the world of 1950's fashion. There are two dressed dolls and a gift set inspired by retro paper doll designs available through regular IT dealers and also an IT Direct exclusive two-doll "Pink Champagne" gift set, featuring Victoire Roux modelling her friend Aurelia's latest creation on her wedding day.

Beautiful doll but not enough to tempt me into buying her, although I want a dark haired Victoire for my collection (the ones I have have all variations of red hair). Elegant and bright ensemble with nice details and accessories. It has a whiff of the Busy Gal Barbie. This hat has been done to death in Poppy Parker line and should be retired. There were so many different hat designs in the 1950s so it would be nice to see something else for a change. Love the colour combinations.

IMG_9177.JPG

A new Aurelia, not that different from the first one at first look. I don’t particularly like the dress with the weird draping. I wish we could see more Charles James style gowns instead of Bon Bon style dresses. Not a fan of the colour combination either. She has the more realistic gloves which is a very good thing.

IMG_9193.JPG

I really don’t like this one. The colours, shapes, textures, are all somewhat off. The Victoire gown in particular looks shapeless. The fabric and embroidery don’t particularly do the shape justice and keep it from looking good on the doll. It’s a great price for two dolls though. Oven mittens make an appearance on the bride.

The Met Gala Moschino Barbie sold out really fast!

It was only fitting that Mattel would (finally) release a Met Gala Barbie, even more fitting that it would be done for the Camp: Notes on Fashion exhibition AND designed by Moschino (and Linda Kyaw from Mattel)! The doll is perfect for the occasion, even though I cannot help thinking what Bob Mackie would have done with this theme. Unfortunately the doll sold out a few hours after appearing in the Met Museum shop, her 500 pieces are all gone. With a price of $75.00, it was only natural that it would sell out. There were two versions, a blonde and an AA. See the photos below, along with the description and details from the museum shop.

Barbie_Met_Gala_80049365_01.jpg

The most Moschino Barbie® Doll ever! Made by Mattel exclusively for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in a limited edition of 500, the Moschino Barbie is a creative collaboration between the Italian luxury brand and Mattel's spirited icon of style.

This collectible doll wears a super-sweet, super-fabulous ensemble. The outfit reimagines a look from Jeremy Scott’s 2015 spring/summer couture collection for Moschino, in which all the designs were inspired by Mattel's Barbie.

Think exaggerated. Think extravagant. Think over-the-top. Think camp—the subject of The Costume Institute's spring 2019 show, Camp: Notes on Fashion. Mashing up concepts from the past with looks from today, this eye-opening style offers a nudge and a wink to those in the know.

Includes earrings, purse, shoes, sunglasses, shawl, dress, doll stand, and Certificate of Authenticity.

Jeremy Scott (the Moschino designer) made the real life dress for Kacey Mushgraves to wear in the Met Gala. In addition, Musgraves carried a blow dryer clutch. The drop diamond earrings are from Forevermark and the shoes from Aldo.

Anna Sui Japan does Barbie as part of her Swinging Tokyo Collection!

Anna Sui, the well known US fashion designer, has launched a new project called "SWINGING TOKYO". Taking inspiration from the 1960s London street culture "Swinging London", which is the origin of her creation, she proposes a fashion that can be enjoyed freely and urbanely for the next generation of Tokyo. In this project, she initiated a collaboration with various other creatives. From May 1st, 2019 (Wednesday), sales begin at Isetan Shinjuku and the official online shop (Japan).

IMG_9079.PNG

One of the project’s collections is a collaboration with Barbie. There are four types of dolls combined with an outfit designed by Anna Sui and an original mug, comprising a set of Barbie Doll and Anna Sui collection-ware that will be cherished by all ages. The combination of the catchy and girly world of both brands is a must-see for fans. Each set is sold for ¥21,600 (about US$194.00). There are some T-shirts too. The title below and all information are translated from the Japanese site.

IMG_9078.JPG

According to the Japanese website, special items created from the "SWINGING TOKYO" project will start being sold sequentially at the Isetan Shinjuku Store and Anna Sui Official Online Shop from Wednesday, May 1st, 2019. I could not find any Barbie items online yet. The price is expensive for the doll quality: it is just a $5.00 play line doll repackaged in a Sui branded box. You do get an Anna Sui dress with her plus the mug but $190.00 for these is just too much. Remember that a Barbie collector designer doll is usually $100-150. And they are very limited. I wouldn’t pay even half the price for those sets, knowing of probably discard the doll. My favourite is the black dress with the bow. And for that price, they could have given each set a differently coloured mug, no?

Female Icon Dasha d’Amboise - Doll designed by Vasilen Minkov, winner of the 2018 International Integrity Toys Design Competition

Late last year, Integrity Toys announced the winner of their 2018 International Design Competition. This past weekend the W Club introduced the doll based on competition winner. Vasilen Milkov's winning entry: the elegant "Female Icon" Dasha d'Amboise™. Vasilen won this competition for the second time and rightly so. He’s a fashion stylist in real life and also part of the amazing duo valeyofdolls who make incredible outfits and styling for dolls. I interviewed them for Haute Doll Magazine, when it still existed.

IMG_9043.JPG

According to the rules of the competition, the winning design, voted on by W Club members, underwent a series of adjustments to make it production ready, while preserving the spirit of Vasilen's original design, alongside his choice of character. Check below the original entry.

IMG_9048.JPG

W Club members got to begin pre-ordering her early and in the special price of $150.00 US versus the general public, who can purchase this doll for $160.00 US. There is no limit I’m how many dolls one can preorder. The doll does not count as one of the five W Club exclusives for 2019.

IMG_9047.JPG

I can’t begin to express how much I love this doll. I am a big fan of Vasilen and his work and of Valeyofdolls too, so this is right up my alley. There are no obvious changes to the initial design, which is a very good thing. Dasha is a gorgeous sculpt and I have only two dolls with this sculpt, so this will be the third. I love the red hair and pale skin combination, even though I don’t think it fits the pale colour of the dress, but the black accessories and the bolero help it fit. The outfit has many of the Valeyofdolls trademark touches, like the exquisite pleating, the leather accessories and that avant- guard style I love. Read on if you want to preorder her.

The Monarchs Homme collection is unveiled by Integrity Toys

March 25th officially marked the introduction of one of the most anticipated collections from Integrity Toys in a long time; The Monarchs Homme. Brainchild of Integrity Toys designer Vaughn Sawyers, it is the reincarnation of the beloved FR: Homme line, the one collectors have been waiting for six years now. Their revamped storyline revolves around a super exclusive social club called "The Monarch", supposedly a gathering place for business, ideas, networking and more that has been around for more than three generations. The members who are part of this institution call themselves "THE MONARCHS" and that is how the line got it’s name. Exclusive male clubs are such an outdated idea in 2019 that it made me cringe just reading about it. Let’s be done with patriarchy even in our fantasy doll storylines, please.

IMG_8730.JPG

Both the email for the W Club as well as the forum chat with Vaughn revealed that, while brand new characters/sculpts will be introduced later as the series progresses, for this first release and as a form of re-introduction (since many have been absent for a while), the focus has been kept on key characters that collectors know already from FR: Homme and other Integrity Toys collections. Asked about the most popular male characters from the original line, Pierre, Francisco and Darius, Vaughn said that the last one will make an appearance sooner than expected, the second is coming too but did not specifically replied about the first. There are four dealer doll’s and two lottery ones. If you hurry, there might be some left still at Integrity Toys dealers. Remember they all have the new body, Homme 2.0, first shown on the convention Monarch, Declan.

IMG_8731.JPG

My overall impression: underwhelmed. After six years of waiting the return of the Hommes, I was bummed to see faces from other lines taking their place. The clothing is not coherent. While some outfits are daring and all look well made and tailored, they were not what I was expecting from a line being worked upon for so long. I will expand on this on each particular doll below. The raised price point is a cause of conabput many collectors. $175 for a doll is a lot, accesyand quality notwithstanding. Why are all these $45 more than Bellamy Blue from the Industry line, whose outfit and acc are equally well made, rich and detailed? Vaughn said the price point can change according to the outfit and accessories. I did not order any doll now and will wait to see when and how Darius and the rest of the old gang will appear.

UPDATE: Most dealers have all dolls available yet, so it seems the pricing is keeping people from buying.

UPDATE II: caved in and preordered Tenzin. Vu Nguyen posted some visuals from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and when I saw them it clicked. It’s a Japanese manga and anime series.

  • Black aviator sunglasses;
  • Faux-silver wrist watch;
  • Faux-silver cuff bracelet and ring;

IMG_8736.JPG

This is my favourite of the reveal. I always liked the Ace McFly sculpt but do not have one. And although a $175 doll that does not feature a belt is a major faux pas in my book, I will probably enter the lottery for this one. The straps on the waist and sleeves of the jacket are functional (Velcro) and adjust how tight it fits. Hope the hair in the final production doll stays the same.

  • Meticulously crafted, multi-layered outfit composed of an intricate faux-leather jacket with contrasting yoke and collar, Japanese-inspired hakama multi-layered pants, and two layered t-shirts creating a transparency effect;
  • "Monarchs" branded sock boots;

  • Stud earrings and two rings;
  • Oversized faux-leather gym bag with removable shoulder strap;
  • Figure stand;

IMG_8741.JPG
IMG_8742.JPG

 I usually go head over heels for Asian dolls but this one looks too cartoony. I love the jacket, it’s perfect. The pants, based on Japanese traditional hakkama pants (tattsuke hakkama with the narrow lower part), now worn mostly by martial arts practitioners, would have looked better if they were full length. I like the layered T-shirts too. I’d prefer his sock boots to have a band over the back of the foot, better embroidered like the ones I saw in a Singapore boutique, below:

I know they have Monarchs written on their side, but still, wouldn’t you rather have the ones above? Yes, me too. The bag has a magnetic closure on top of its zipper.

I like Tobias, I have the one from the MLP line, which is probably why this one does not make me want it. The outfit and accessories do not scream “buy me” at all, especially for a $175 doll. Plus I hate fanny bags. Really. They should be condemned for eternity in the flames of fashion inferno.

Declan is always a favourite with collectors. This one is a bit bland as a doll, but with an interesting outfit, that plays with contrasting textures and has a modern feel. The iPad case could have been made in a bolder colour to offset his neutral clothing. I dislike thick soled loafers in real life and it surely transfers into dolly land.

IMG_8762.JPG
IMG_8763.JPG

For a business man, I’d expect Elias to have at least a briefcase or at least a laptop case with a computer miniature inside, to justify his price tag. Unfortunately all he has to show is another checkered suit (we’ve seen it before) and a fur coat (Industry vibes here). His sculpt is the original Dracula one, as Vaughn mentioned in the forum, the final Perry sculpt was supposedly softer. Did not like it before, do not like it now. I’d rather see Pierre or Francisco in his place.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This Romain is a hair color variation of the one offered to convention guests who attended the Monarch launch event last October at the Luxe Life convention, in lieu of the promised doll/centerpiece. This blonde version will be made available for W Club members only later this Spring/Summer. Should quantities remain of the convention version, Integrity Toys will announce at a later date how they will be offered. Do not contact Integrity Toys at this time to inquire, as they do not have any additional information available.

IMG_8768.JPG

This is my least favourite sculpt of male Integrity Toys dolls. No matter the version, I find his face off putting. I like the sweater and pants though. The boots could have been a bit more detailed at this price point. The camera with accessories and bag is a nice touch. This is a lottery doll as well. I suspect the edition size will be determined by the size of the other version.

So what do you think of this new collection of Hommes? Did you order any? Let me know in the comments.
