The Story:

Poppy Parker returns to the City of Light, but this time, it’s for the Noir Cosmetics ad campaign, to unveil a brand new companion makeup line for their iconic “When in Paris” fragrance!

Feeling light and carefree on the way to the photo shoot, Poppy grabbed her favourite dotted trench and wore it over a very chic, sleek black turtleneck and cropped trousers combo, which of course landed her on the pages of all the top French fashion magazines, making her fans scramble to copy the look!

Once she finally got to the studio, there was a lot of back and forth regarding the perfect gown she would wear in the ads, but everyone soon agreed that only Poppy’s friend Monsieur Mignon, her "go to" couturier, could pull this off! Monsieur was thrilled to recreate one of her most coveted dresses in black while adding some delicate embellishments, making the gown even more special for his favourite client! It was just what the Noir campaign needed, and the perfect look for Poppy to cast her charms on her French fans for the second time. When in Paris, indeed!

She’s a recoloured version of Friend or Foe Poppy Parker, from the gift set when Ginger made her first appearance, which was back in December 2019 - so it is another Moment for Poppy. I like the dress better in black, it makes it surely more Parisian and more sophisticated, but, as you see in the photo below and will not hear or read about it anywhere from Integrity Toys…

…the doll is a double throwback: she’s got the screening of the Audrey Hepburn Sabrina dolls, which I mostly have - and they look so much better than she does, mainly because of the hairstyle and the red lipstick. The photo above mimics an Audrey classic from Breakfast At Tiffany’s, which was remade by Steven Meisel with Christy Turlington. If I did not have any of those dolls, I’d grab this one right away. Not now though. The black beatnik outfit is a typical Audrey look from both Sabrina (IT released a version there in the Most Sophisticated gift set) and Funny Face (which looks more like this one). The make up and perfume accessories have been seen before many times.

Fashion Royalty Moments mini collection - did we really need this?

We already knew since the beginning of this club year that a major part of the releases in 2023 would be “Moments”, i.e. repeated versions in alternate colours of previous dolls from Jessy Ayala. Fashion Royalty now has three new dolls for the Moments Collection, designed by him. They are all available through W Club-only "right-to-buy" lotteries and each has an edition of 1,200 dolls. I think the Moments idea was interesting but that it had to expand throughout the IT history and not only on Jessy’s dolls. There are so many incredible dolls that deserved a second appearance in a recoloured version and we are not getting that, having instead dolls that their original versions are only a few years old.

Another iteration of the Glam aesthetic, this Adele is a direct recolouring of Miami Glam Kesenia Valentinova from 2020 online convention, who was a re-imagining of Glow Vanessa Perrin from 2006m who was inspired by the Versace Barbie of 2004. The doll looks gorgeous and reminds me of two previous versions of her: Le Smoking from the Gloss convention (2014) and Petite Robe Classique from the 2020 online event. The dress was not a favourite in its first iteration on Kesenia, it remains so this time, with the added problem that it looks very transparent. I might have entered for this doll but January means two pre-orders arriving, so I will skip. Best doll of the three in my opinion. They gave a warning about her hair colour in the email:

We have seen Agnes sport chartreuse before: Truly, Madly, Deeply was the event doll at the 2012 collection presentation. She even had a hairstyle quite similar to this. Of course she is the recoloured version of Intimate Soirée from the 2020 online convention. She looks gorgeous and the colouring suits her a lot. But, as I already have Truly, Madly, Deeply as well as the 2014 event doll High Visibility, who has similar colouring (red hair and lips), I think I’m covered. Love the fox brooch. And I remembered that her dress reminds me of Cosmetic Takeover Natalia.

So, are you entering for any of these three ladies? You can also check the video showing them rotating - and wonder why did Adele get short-shifted and has what clearly is a bad, homemade video, instead of the glammed up one the other two dolls have.

Claudia Schiffer Barbie finally gets a commercial release - is the doll meeting expectations?

Back in 2017, for her 30th career anniversary and the release of her book, Mattel made an OOAK Barbie in the likeness of Claudia Schiffer, the famous supermodel from Germany. That doll recreated one of Claudia Schiffer’s iconic looks from a 1994 Ellen Von Unwerth photo shoot for Vogue Italia, wearing a metallic Versace dress. Three years later, to celebrate the model’s 50th birthday, Mattel presented two more OOAK Claudia Barbies: one wearing a Versace 1994 Atelier blue gown, and another dressed in a Balmain design similar to one worn by Schiffer in the label’s spring 2016 campaign.

Now, Mattel decided to release a commercial Barbie Claudie, recreating the cerulean pleated floor-length gown by Versace, combined with a faille taffeta bustier inspired by the signature Versace corset bodice. Per Mattel “The doll makes a bold statement, pairing Schiffer’s strength and femininity with Versace’s luxurious glamour”.

The Story: Claudia Schiffer chose what Barbie would wear for a doll in her honour. This is one of her all-time favourite gowns, celebrating an iconic ‘90s fashion moment. "Recreating the gown in Barbie scale was a fun challenge,” says designer Carlyle Nuera. “I studied any photo I could find and watched videos of the runway show over and over.” Strappy heels, blonde curls, and soft makeup complete the look. This doll is inspired by the 2020 design made in honour of Schiffer's 50th birthday.

Am I the only one that thinks they did a hatchet job on the new doll? The face paint does not replicate the model faithfully, even though the doll sculpt is the same used in the OOAK dolls. Of course one cannot expect a commercial doll to have the same standards as a one off doll, but still I believe for the price, ($85 in the US, at least $170 in Europe) they could have done better. The hair is also not styled very well. The gown is weird - why would anyone gather a pleated fabric at the waist, when the original design is not like this? Probably to create volume at the bottom of the dress, since the pleats are straight and not like the original. The sewing of the corset is also not that good. And those plastic shoes? For such a limited release, it is awful. There seems to be a discrepancy regarding the quantity of dolls produced: the US certificates give 5,000, the EU ones 1,000. It may refer to the specific markets but they could have just written 6,000.

Neutral Code: Poppy Parker goes mod once more!

We got a mini collection of Poppy Parker dolls this year - and, as we already knew, it is inspired by the Mod era. The concept is that Poppy travels from New York to London for the opening of avant-garde artist Riley Ridget's latest "Op Art" installation. I love this one - the smoky eye combined with pale lips is always a winner for me and the pied-de-poule (or hounds-tooth) pattern always a favourite.She fully embodies the concept. She will look great next to The Girl from I.N.T.E.G.R.I.T.Y. Poppy from 2014, which would fit perfectly in this collection too. She has the Hold That Tiger screening. The closest I could get researching the inspiration is this 1966 Geoffrey Beene outfit.

Not feeling this one. And the main reason is that she reminds me a lot of the British Invasion Poppy from the Swinging London collection in 2017, which I already own. Then, it is the lip colour that does not seem to go with her hair colouring at all. She has darker hair than BI. Also their hats are identical - only BI’s is white.  So I skipped entering the lottery for this one. The inspiration is from a 2013 outfit from Fay Spring Summer collection, which of course was inspired by similar mod era dresses.

It looks like I’m finally getting a freckle faced doll after all - this Ginger looks like the epitome of mod era girl in the variety of outfits she comes in! One of the most beautiful Nadja dolls ever created, she is smashing! I am so glad she is a W Club doll and we do not have to go through hoops to acquire her. Every element of the doll and her outfits comes together perfectly and looks amazing and very cohesive. The black top and skirt look a lot like this Blumarine Spring/Summer 2022 ensemble - and of course we all know the original butterfly top by Ungaro, worn by Mariah Carey in the VH1 Divas 2000 tribute to Diana Ross. The red dress could either be inspired by some outfits with asymmetrical necklines in the same 2022 Blumarine collection or this year’s Spring Summer collection that features a similar asymmetrical transparent black version. The transparent bag, that we have seen before, is of course the Coperni Glass Swipe bag. The black bag is Aupen’s Fearless model. I could not find the belt anywhere, did anyone else? Would look amazing as a necklace too. The dolls reminds me of Zendaya and also Adut Akech, She’s definitely a keeper.
