The Story:

Nadja Rhymes thought she was a star long before she became one. Whether it was due to her fibbing and faking, or her fabulous friends and colleagues, she had found a way to become “that girl”—the sensation of the modelling world and a big-time name. Her daddy taught her to value herself, and now she intended to get paid. So, she informed the NU. Face agency that she wanted the best of the best offers. The agency was more than happy to oblige, since she was in demand. She was en route to Tokyo for one of the weirdest jobs she had encountered thus far. She was given a first-class ticket to Japan, luxury accommodations and a cool $50,000 just to take a meeting. This was insane. First, NU. Face already had a Tokyo division, so why pay for her? Second, nobody pays for just a meeting…unless it was for some unsavory purpose. But Nadja knew NU. Face would never put her in a bad situation. But they couldn’t tell her who the client was. It was a secret. The trip and the money, particularly for just a meeting, was too much to pass up. Nadja left from JFK and had a layover in Charles De Gaulle Airport. A driver then met Nadja as she landed at Haneda (Tokyo International Airport), and brought her to a car. When she arrived at the building and opened the door on the 22nd floor, she was dumbstruck. It was a…toy company? Nadja thought she was lost, but was assured she was in the right place. Shuttled into a meeting of admirers, she found out that she was at the company behind the famous “Big Love Bear” blind box trend that began in Japan but had become a global craze. The executives, a translator explained, wanted to gift her a set of the latest Big Love Bear bag charms. Nadja was effusive. They took some photos together and she left. “$50 grand for that?” she thought to herself. “These corporations are crazy!” But it was the easiest and fastest money she ever made. She clipped one of the cute Big Love Bear charms on her purse and immediately people on the street came up and started taking pictures. Soon she was surrounded and could barely move. She laughed to herself, realising that she wasn’t the #1 sensation-- it was her bag charm, which apparently was very rare. “Well, I guess that marketing isn’t so crazy!” she mumbled, shaking her head as she tried to make it through the crowd, back to her hotel. -Designed by Jessy Ayala

The first thing I said when I saw this doll in the presentation was “Why not an Ayumi?”. I think we have gotten too many Nadjas lately and it is time to put her in the back burner and turn to other sculpts from NU Face: Ayumi would have fit this style so perfectly and the Japan story would have benefited greatly - just imagine her with this skin tone and outfit. Having said that, the doll is gorgeous and will surely be the top pre-order of the registration. Her outfit is very current and the blind box tease of the small bear accessory only adds to the demand. The large bag is of course a Louis Vuitton X Murakami Speedy copy, with all the added charms and the blind box bear (Labubu much? Aren’t we all over the Labubu craze by now?). The jacket is by Ganni (the fake grommets and belts notwithstanding) and yes, we have seen the boots before on Ayumi (they’re Givenchy). I was initially sceptical of ordering her but caved in at the end.

The Story:

Vanessa didn’t know why Nadja Rhymes scowled at her when they crossed paths at the Charles De Gaulle Airport, but Nadja never seemed to like her. Fortunately, they were headed in very different directions, at least Vanessa believed, looking at Nadja’s cool street fashion vs. her own resort vibe. Once Veronique had generated massive accidental buzz on the balcony of the Henri 7 hotel in nothing but a robe and towel on her head, every company seemed to want to collaborate. The hotel itself loved playing a role in the press and came up with an idea to open a W Cosmetics co-branded spa in their newest location—a resort destination just outside of Barcelona. Veronique was overwhelmed, so she sent Vanessa to go close the deal. Vanessa used the opportunity as a bit of a getaway. Her big sister was counting on her, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have a few days to herself to lounge by the pool. All work and no play was not Vanessa’s mantra. Once settled in her suite, she arranged for a cabana by the pool. She definitely wanted to “see,” but she appreciated the privacy that kept her from “being seen.” She arranged her lounge chair just so, ordered a smoothie with a “little something” in it, and tried to get comfortable. I love this Vanessa and did not hesitate one bit to add her to my membership this year. I have both Second Skin (same sculpt) and Serenity, so she has to come home. Plus she’s wearing a re-worked Jacquemus dress from his Le Peysan collection. I like how this is not a literal copy but a reworked outfit that works in more pieces than the original. Her accessories are not as many as Nadja’s, but are nice and complement the outfit. They could have added a straw bag and a cocktail since she’s in a cabana by the pool.

After the incredible success Poppy Parker had with her initial British invasion trip that marked the launch of her "Poppy Gear" clothing line, she was just thrilled to jet off to London once again! A return to London was long overdue and she couldn't wait to see all the wonderful friends she made. And of course, she couldn't wait to go shopping at all those trendy boutiques; her wardrobe needed a boost from the hippest shops that only London offered. But it was business first, with a stop at "Poppy Gear" head offices right from the plane. That shopping trip would have to wait just a little while longer...

This is the first time in quite a while that I really like all three of the upgrade dolls - and I mean I am getting them all! What is not to like about this Poppy? Yes, she has freckles, which is not my thing on a doll, as I believe they look fake and painted on no matter what. But they are almost invisible, so problem solved. Her face is gorgeous, her dress impeccable (even though it’s creatively copying Mattel, who copied from the era styles of course). She’s supposed to be channelling Day Tripper Poppy Parker, but the screening is different and the hair slightly longer.I did not like Gay Tripper (I know I am a minority on this) but I like this one! She has the dress, a bathing suit (will she be swimming in the Thames? LOL) and a bag that all feature the same print, custom made for this outfit. She’s mod and it is always my favourite styling of Poppy. She will fit right in with my Swinging London ladies.

Integrity Toys 2024 convention - Stilettos Out day 1: The convention collection and welcome doll

This year, Integrity Toys decided that it was about time they returned to an in-person convention, instead of the virtual online events they organized from 2020 onward, because of the pandemic. It sold out as is always the case with the IT events. They did a rehearsal last year with the Curated event (which was sold out as well but it left much to be desired in the organization department). So you can imagine that all club members, even the ones not attending, held their breath waiting for the event to start.

And then the unexpected happened: attendees received an email, about a week from the event, that the dolls for the convention had not arrived and would not be at the hotel, due to a combination of port workers three-day strike, the repeated hurricanes striking US east coast etc. Instead, attendees would have to make do with the prototype dolls on display, a QR code system to place their orders on-site. The dolls would ship to the attendees homes after the event and the company would supply gift cards as credit for the shipping costs. The furore of the club members was such (plus pointing out a clause in the terms and conditions of the convention ticket that specified free shipping in case the dolls were not delivered at the event), that IT had to change course and give real free shipping to all attendees. Of course those attending that come outside the US still have to pay taxes /custom duties when dolls are shipped to them instead of travelling back in their suitcase, and that is quite an extra cost to shoulder. The overall tone of the email did not help, as it was far from apologetic and more like “oops! we had an accident, no biggie”. The fact that the company waits until the very last week before an event to receive their merchandise for it shows poor planning. Even people like me, outside the US, knew about the hurricane season troubles, even the planned port workers strike. Also, since the pandemic, shipping keeps having serious problems with being on time (not that it did not have any before, but…), so it is always prudent to plan ahead of time. Anyway, let’s hope that all this will be seriously addressed at some point in the convention, directly from IT to their loyal, hard cash earned paying customers face to face.

So, on with the show - what is the Stilettos Out story all about? As per the club email:

Many highly sought-after, ultra-rare artefacts have disappeared all over the world and no one, not even the savviest, most fashionable detectives from the the SSB (Secret Style Bureau) and other covert agencies like FPI (Fashion Police International) have been able to figure out how these seemingly disconnected items are related! This year’s convention attendees were invited to participate in this intriguing mystery, tasked to help fictional true crime podcaster/blogger Donna Drake collect clues that will ultimately solve this decades-old cold case!

On the first day of the event, attendees arrived for registration (with early registration taking place on the previous day) and received their welcome bag, which included a mysterious dossier with some clues, and also learned they were getting a Welcome Gift Set, seeing the first part, the "Cryptic Cases" Imogen Lennox as Donna Drake doll, to be completed with more clothes and accessories during the event. The whole thing is part of the clue searching, as she’s the investigating agent all attendees must help uncover the mystery. Face Seven Style Lab, which will be in the next article.

Poppy Parker plays Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Fashion Movie! Her braided hairstyle, apart from the famous film icon, reminds me of the Tokyo Twilight Poppy. She has the Spicy in Spain screening. Do you remember the Style Lab 2018 convention collection? It was named Miss behave and had a build-a-doll Poppy Parker doll as gift if you had all the collection bought (her pieces were hidden inside the other doll/outfit boxes). Her outfit is very 60s era space age looks, like the ones made by Courrèges and Cardin.

A new version of Tate Tanaka is always good news. When I first saw online photos of this guy from the convention (the prototype doll displayed there), I was instantly smitten. After a while though I noticed two things that made me go hmmm - his bland screening and his huge forehead. When you name a character Raven, you should go that little bit towards the goth connotations, no? Some eyeliner, a stronger brow. The suit is kind of tame, if you take out the boots and leather cummerbund, but I like its texture, like a deconstructed tweed.

Who is the mysterious character embodied by Elyse? Do not google it, you’re in for a great laugh (or not, depending on your situation). Don;t they google the perspective names of characters before they trademark them? LOL. Anyway, she’s a gorgeous doll, with an amazing gown and quite an original screening for Elyse. it shows what you can do if you step, even just a bit, out of the so-called box. Great work Alain (he designed Imogen too). Having said that, she has very minimal accessories - and why aren’t the shoes photographed with the rest of them? She needed at least a bracelet and a ring.

I love Dania with short hair - it gives her a very current Linda Evangelista feel (even though to me Eugenia will always be Linda in Fashion Royalty dolls). She looks stunning (Mothership screening) and rekindled my interest in getting an upgrade doll again, after last year’s none. Should we worry that the prototype has a badly drawn eyeliner or will it be fixed for production? She does give the intended Audrey Hepburn impression, as Jessy said in the video presentation, especially from her early days in Roman Holiday (Jessy talked about Sabrina and the b&w gown but they showed a background photo of a moped). I love the texture in the dress fabric. And what fabulous accessories! The bag is in the style of the Cannolo bag by Jill Sander (thanks to goddess Nevraforever for the help in identifying this!) I must say that this year’s prices are $5.00 up from last year’s (which was the same as the year before). Not much, but not nothing either. And it surely preambles an increase in general pricing going forward.

She’s a lovely doll, I’ll give her that. She even reminds me of model Bella Hadid. But, I already own Natural Wonder Rayna and Wild Feeling Rayna, both more fierce and stylish and powerful. She pales in comparison to them. If you do not own any of those two though, she’s a perfect buy. And very versatile. Her colouring owes a lot to Going Public Eugenia but adjusted for Rayna. Love the accessories (Valentino inspiration bag and earrings), could not care less about the outfit (is it Versace?). Pass, even though I’d love to have the accessories.

And there she is: the second Charlie’s Angels inspired doll (after Undercover Angel Poppy channeling Farrah Fawcett), Jaclyn Smith lookalike Poppy! Many had asked for more dolls inspired from the legendary 70s TV series and it seems David Buttry is giving them to us! She does not have a second outfit as the first one did (upgrade dolls come with one set of clothes) and they did show a sneak peek of a 70s style outfit that fits her and will be available later in the year to W Club members (see the video, link further up), but the first doll with two outfits was only $15.00 more and it really feels disappointing. I will be getting this one cause I love my Angels (and her name is Angel Eyes which also is a favourite Olivia Newton-John song), but the whole situation makes getting her not feel that satisfying.

The 2023 W Club registration period is open!

It is the end of February and that can only mean one thing: the 2023 W Club registration is open! If you want to be a member of the W Club, make sure to register by 9 PM ET on Tuesday, March 21st. Go here if you are anxious to do so and come back to read what I think about the dolls below. You can register for as many memberships as you want and pre-order 1, 2 or all 3 of the upgrade dolls per membership for an additional fee before the deadline passes. So this year Integrity Toys will have an in-person event again. In the presentation they mentioned it will be small and held in the Washington D.C. area sometime this summer. One of the event dolls, in a colour variation, will be available for all W Club members, attending or not. I’m guessing a 100-person luncheon with two or three dolls available to attendees. Upgrades have the same price as last year, so I am guessing the same happen for the dolls released in 2023.

It was a major surprise to almost everyone, myself included, when we discovered that all three upgrade dolls were colour variations of previously released dolls. Jessy mentioned that he wanted to revisit dolls from the past that had their moment in a particular release, and offer them in different colours. This will appear again in 2023, not as a coherent collection, but as releases spread throughout the year. While the idea is certainly appealing when the dolls are grails that are beyond what most people can now afford to buy, the whole concept looks lazy and uninspired. If, as they have done in the past, they re-interpreted older dolls in a fresh and inspiring way, I am guessing it would have gone down much better. And if this is a way for the company to save money, it could certainly have been better handled. Alejandra has been whitewashed completely here - while her previous two versions were darker, this one is FR white. I still think the original is better looking but I am happy that people who could not get her then, as she was a dealer exclusive, have their chance now. One other thing: when a character is only on its third ever release, it sucks a bit to get a repeat. They should have kept Alejandra for one of the five club exclusives and have another NU Face, like Erin, as the upgrade.

The Story: Collector-favorite Eugenia is invoking all the beauty of a Summer Rose in this gorgeous twist on "English Rose" from the 2019 Integrity Toys Live From Fashion Week Convention!

Eugenia is a character we often get as an upgrade - Le Tuxedo in 2020, Modernist in 2018, plus Reigning Grace as the Cinematic convention upgrade in 2015. This one is a colour variation of a convention doll, English Rose from the 2019 Live From Fashion Week event. The OG doll was dressed in pale pastels, with dark hair (reminding me of Vivacité Eugenia) and her bag was embroidered instead of textured. The fabric of the original blouse looked like crepe and her barrette had a short tulle veil. She reminds me both of Tuxedo and Going Public (just a bit), and also of Secret Garden a bit, if she went darker. Good for those that missed one of the aforementioned dolls in the first place. I do not like the skirt print, it looks dated and not what one of the Perrins would wear going out.

The Story: When Poppy walked by the window of her favorite boutique, Lemieux, and saw her prized "Powder Puff" peignoir set in a dreamy yellow color, she just couldn't pass it up! And of course, her teddy bear, Plato Parker, had to come along, too!

The original Powder Puff Poppy was released as a lottery doll in the 2016 BonBon collection, which makes this the variant with the oldest connection - albeit of a quite near past. And she is actually the third colour variant, as there was a pink one as the giveaway in the 2019 Poppy Parker event, which had two colour variant Poppy dolls. Unlike the baby blue OG, the teddy bears of both later variants are white, with the latest one smiling ominously. The actual doll is the best of the three, in her dark skin tone, but she reminds me too much of both Milan Poppy and Resort Ready to entice me. Something tells me that I am going to buy less IT dolls this year, if this trend continuous - last year was the first ever that I pre-ordered only one of the five exclusives. Again, while these three are all beautiful dolls, they don’t entice me, as an older collector, to upgrade my club membership. On the other hand, I am glad that many people are getting variations of grails they cannot afford otherwise. And that can only be a good thing.

Yes, it is this time of the year - the W Club registration period for 2022 is open! You can register from today up until March the 16th. I have the link below, as well as more information about the club and of course the upgrade dolls. A crucial reminder: registration is only open once a year, so make sure to register by 5 PM ET on Wednesday, March 16th, otherwise you will have to wait another year to become a member.

Each doll is $160 above the cost of your $50 base membership. $30 is payable today and $130 balance is due (plus shipping/fees/taxes) upon shipment, expected to be Fall 2022. I do not know if these prices are with the special discount for W Club members that we will be getting for many dolls this year instead of the coupon or these are regular prices (my money is on the discount and that the regular price will be $175). They also mentioned the effort to have lower shipping costs from USPS and that they get lower prices from them as a company - which is not true, as I had people ship me dolls from the US and pay the same price as Integrity charges. I am thinking of using an alternate way to ship dolls from now on, will try it as soon as possible and let you know how it goes. Let’s see the dolls now!

Most of us had predicted that the NU Face upgrade doll this year would be Eden as a complimentary doll to her NU Classic twin, Lilith, and here she is. Just like the Mademoiselle Eden and Lilith dolls. She has a very different style to that of her sister: she is the downtown to Lilith’s uptown girl. A common thread would be the lovely colours of all the different elements of the outfit and the same shape glasses. The only way to make this one better would have been to have her in an afro - the middle part is beginning to look tired already. The top reminds me a lot of the convention Vanessa one and it is probably this one by Alexander McQueen. The bag and shoes are Versace (La Medusa small handbag and La Medusa Charm mules). Put her in the cart I say.

I must say that if there was another character instead of Agnes (and of course not Elyse or Eugenia yet again) I would have been a bit happier. Agnes is popular and is a favourite of mine, but there is no shortage of her ever, while some other ladies have been missing in action (Kyori, where art thou?). The doll is very beautiful and reads like a lighter version of Miami Agnes, but the dress frankly looks like a mess to me. When you do a feather and crystals covered piece of clothing in this scale, making it very tailored with cut outs and stuff is overkill. Since it was 60s inspired as Jessy informed us on the video, the dress could have been an A-line shift that would have quite a stronger impact with the feathers and the embroidery. The hair style is so Poppy Parker (The Happening for example). And one last thing: why are US people pronouncing Weiss like whiss instead of the proper (German) way which is vaiss?

I think this is the first Poppy that makes evident the fact that she is Tullabelle’s grandmother - I can so imagine the latter wearing this outfit. The 70s vibe is strong with this one. They mentioned on the presentation that, while the Palm Springs collection is still forthcoming, there will be Poppy dolls that are not part of it - this is one of them. Of course the hime haircut, while originating in the Heian period Imperial court of Japan, was popular during the 70s in Japan because of a pop idol adopting it. Cher also had it in the early 70s (at least five photos here and a gorgeous one here), while W Club event Ayumi had it in 2020. Gorgeous doll and outfit.
